TOM MAY signed off his Newcastle Falcons career in style last night when he won the Player of the Season award at the club’s ‘Big Bash’ awards night at Kingston Park.
May, who will leave Newcastle to join French club Toulon this summer, claimed Falcons’ Argon Properties Player of the Season award for the second year in a row.
The 30-year-old starred at fly-half in the absence of longterm absentee Jonny Wilkinson, and finished the campaign as Newcastle’s leading points scorer.
Departing skipper Phil Dowson claimed the Northern Rock Players’ Player of the Season award, while second row Tim Swinson was named Ward Hadaway Academy Player of the Season after breaking through to the Falcons first team.
The Ken Lockerbie Trophy, awarded for consistency over the course of the campaign, was presented to All Black prop Carl Hayman, with Spinnaka Try of the Season going to Tongan centre Tane Tu’ipulotu for his effort against Leicester.
Joe Shaw claimed a special Northumbria University Outstanding Service to the Community award, with Ollie Phillips receiving the Northumbria University Community Foundation Award prior to leaving the North-East to join Stade Francais.
A final presentation saw four players nominated as Heineken Clubmen of the Decade, with May, Hall Charlton, Jonny Wilkinson and Jamie Noon all taking to the stage to receive the honour after playing a combined total of 859 matches during the last 11 years.
