Aycliffe win first Vase tie as a Northern League club

Aycliffe manager Alan Oliver, who was part of the set up when the club last won a Vase tie as a Wearside League club back in 1993, said: “The lads did very well, first when we were down to ten men, and then nine. We tested their keeper a few times.”

Striker Danny Mellanby let the referee know in no uncertain terms about his feelings after he thought he was fouled, and so was shown a red card, but nevertheless Aycliffe still took the lead with a Danny Earl penalty.

But in the second half, Aycliffe defender James Oliver was dismissed for kicking an opponent, although Aycliffe disputed the decision.

There were some good wins by ENL clubs on their travels. Northallerton won 3-2 at Silsden from the North West Counties League.

They went an early goal down, but Northallerton levelled when Adam Emson’s cross flew over everyone into the net for the equaliser, and then Stephen Butterworth fired the second. The NWCL outfit levelled, but Emson got the winner in a scramble near the end.

Northallerton manager Mark Fanning said: “It was a tough game on a compact pitch, and it wasn’t a bad performance against a team that is a division above us.”

South Shields won 2-0 at Yorkshire Amateurs. They were helped on their way by a first minute penalty by Lee Bell, but they didn’t make the game safe until Andy Barclay scored with 15 minutes left.

Bishop Auckland made hard work of beating the second division’s bottom club Ryton 2-0. It wasn’t until the 79th minute that Bishops took the lead when Chris Lawson helped on a Sonny Andrews corner for Arran Wearmouth to touch home, and with four minutes left Jamie Harwood set up Andrews to fire the second.

Bishop Auckland assistant manager Steve West said: “We got the result we wanted at the start of the day, but I was a bit disappointed with the performance. Two late goals finished them off, but give Ryton credit, they worked hard and made it difficult for us.”

Shildon survived a late score before they beat Liversedge 3-2 at Dean Street. Ben Christensen scored the opening goal on 32 minutes with a curling shot from the edge of the box, and five minutes later Sam Garvie fired into the bottom corner for the second. Garvie made it 3-0 early in the second half, but then Liversedge had a late revival when they scored twice.

Shildon manager Gary Forrest said: “I honestly think that the lads switched off when we got to 3-0, and that they got bored.”

Esh Winning beat Albion Sports 4-2 at Waterhouses. Craig Mickle put Esh into the lead, but Albion Sports hit back to lead 2-1 by the hour. However, Chris Smith levelled from the spot for Esh, and then set up Mickle to make it 3-2. Smith made the game safe near the end with another penalty.

Esh Winning manager Andrew Soppitt said: “We were shockingly bad for the majority of the game, but we're through to the next round.”

Bedlington easily beat Darlington RA 7-0 at Welfare Park, scoring six times in the first half. Paul Brayson 2, Phil Bannister 2, Kris Gate, Adam Wilkinson, and an own goal were the scorers.

Darlington Ra manager Nick Harrison said: “We just made too many mistakes. I thought the character and performance we showed in the second half was pleasing but it was a big learning curve for us.”

Consett needed a late goal to beat Hebburn at Belle Vue, but it was well worth waiting for, Chris Scorer scoring with an excellent volley from the edge of the area.

Consett manager Ken Lindoe said: “It was a tight game. We had more possession but chances were rare at both ends. It was a high quality volley that won us the game. We’re very pleased to be in the next round.”

Hebburn manager Paul Bennett said: “It was a very poor game in which we had the better of the chances. We should have scored two before being hit with a sucker punch near the end. The lad will never hit a volley like that again.”

Guisborough strolled to victory at their neighbours Stokesley by 5-0. Austin Johnston scored twice before half time, with Liam McPhillips dribbling from the half way line to score the third. Luke Bythway scored two good goals after the break to make sure of victory.

Stokesley assistant manager Chris Lax said; We’re disappointed, because we started well in the first 20 minutes. Guisborough’s experience showed, and we didn’t compete enough.”

Guisborough manager Chris Hardy said: “The noticeable difference between the two sides were our fire power and organisation which made for a very comfortable win for ourselves.”

Norton needed extra time to beat Chester-le-Street . Scott Donaldson put Chester into the lead, but Anthony Hume equalised. Chester had Stephen Buzzeo sent off, and after Mark Lilley got the winner for Norton in extra time, the visitors’ Richie Storr was also shown red.

Norton manager Andy Campbell said: “It was a great result. We were poor in the first half, but got to grips in the second half and we deserved it. We were disappointed to have Richie Storr sent off, as I thought he shouldn’t have gone.”

Chester-le-Street manager Colin Wake said: “I thought we were hard done to. The sending off of Steve Buzzeo early in the second half changed the game. We should have scored a minute before they equalised, but it was correctly ruled out for offside. In extra time we were out on our feet, but I thought we had done enough to earn a replay.”

Jarrow Roofing won their local derby by 2-0 at Washington , with goals by Dean Thexton and Anthony Myers.

Jarrow Roofing manager Richie McLoughlin said: “We won, but we didn’t play well in patches.”

In the other Vase ties, Team Northumbria were furious about two refereeing decisions that cost them at Pickering, and they went down 3-1, with the home side scoring two late goals.

TN manager Paul Johnson said: “The ref didn’t give us a penalty when our player was fouled, but he said that the ball was outside the box, and then he blew his whistle just after they took a corner, they played on, and they got a penalty for handball when our lad was hit in the stomach.”

Morpeth beat Whitehaven 2-0, Horden lost 6-0 at Penrith, and Celtic Nation lost 2-0 at Thackley. Celtic Nation manager Steve Skinner said: “That was the joint worst performance since I came to the club.”

Holders Dunston plus Ashington, Billingham Synthonia, Newcastle Benfield, West Auckland and Whitley Bay all have exemptions to the second round, as their reward for reaching the last 16 last season.
