Northern League clubs have kicked out a proposal to end extra time in league cup ties.
The management committee proposed that games in the League Cup and Ernest Armstrong Cup that were level at the end of 90 minutes should go straight to penalties, but only a small number of clubs voted for the change.
Last season's League Cup final between Newcastle Benfield and Spennymoor turned out to be a thriller, partly thanks to extra time. Ten man Benfield defended well and scored twice in extra time to win 3-1, but on the other hand an EA Cup tie between Gillford Park and Whickham last season only finished at 10.15 because Whickham scored a last minute winner in normal time. Whickham were held up in traffic on the way to the game, which didn’t kick off until 8.30.
