Billingham Synthonia will set off at noon on Friday for their adventure to Cornwall for their fifth round FA Vase tie – but the long distance won’t worry them.

Synners have been handed one of the furthest possible ties of the round in terms of distance with a near 800 mile round trip to Torpoint in Cornwall – a town on the Cornish side of the Devon/Cornwall border, on the western side of Plymouth Sound.

Torpoint is in the same county as St Blazey, who have played Dunston in the past, and Truro, who have faced Whitley Bay and Newcastle Benfield in previous competitions.

Secretary Graham Craggs said: “We’re setting off by bus at midday on Friday, and we hope to be down there at about 8pm. We’ll stop for at least one break on the way down, possibly two. We’ll stay overnight in a hotel, and prepare for the game on the Saturday.

“Under the rules, we’re allowed to stay the Saturday night as well, but we’re coming back straight after the game. There’s no financial benefit to either club, because it’s already a loss making situation, and so another hotel stay would make it worse.”

Synners have already travelled an appreciable distance in the competition – to Westfields near Hereford two rounds ago – but Craggs says that Synners won’t mind the long haul.

“We really enjoyed that trip,” he said. “It was probably the best weekend the club has had away for a very long time, because it all went so smoothly and there was a great camaraderie in the build up to the game and afterwards.”

However, on the team front, they will be without full back Danny Newby and midfielder Danny Yale because of injury.

Two other Northern League clubs are travelling on Friday afternoon for Saturday games – Dunston go to Stansted in Essex and Spennymoor head to Poole in Dorset.
