Spennymoor moved into second place in the STL First Division with a 2-1 derby win over Bishop Auckland at the Brewery Field last night.
Moors took the lead after 38 minutes through a Steve Capper penalty after Craig Ruddy was brought down. Capper missed another penalty midway through the second half, and Moors didn’t make the game safe against the battling Bishops until the 90th minute, when Calvin Smith slid home a left wing cross. Wayne Gredziak scored a last minute consolation for Bishops.
West Auckland easily beat bottom club Ryton 5-0. Matty Tymon scored his first goal for the club with a 30th minute penalty, then Adam Nicholls set up Mattie Moffat just on half time. Stuart Banks scored from a rebound for the third on 70 minutes, with recent signing Chris Lund poaching two more in the last 15 minutes.
Esh Winning lost 2-1 at home to South Shields, after they led at one point with a goal by Dan Lennon. Shields scored twice in the last 25 minutes through Chris Winn and new signing Keith Hutchinson.
Whitley Bay scored three times in the first half to set up a 3-1 home win over Bedlington. Chris MacFarlane, Paul Chow and Brian Smith put them 3-0 up, with Alex Benjamin pulling a goal back from the spot after 75 minutes. Whitley are now into fifth.
Sunderland RCA had a good 3-2 away win at Dunston. The RCa took the lead with a Leon Carling header from a Keith Graydon free kick, but Dunston levelled with a diving header by Andy Bulford from a Lee McAndrew cross.
Steve Pickering fired Dunston into a 2-1 lead after 55 minutes, and they were denied further goals by two good saves by RCA keeper Gary Hoggeth.
But Carl Beasley levelled with a header from a Graydon free kick, and with ten minutes left the outstanding Graydon scored direct from another setpiece.
In the second division, North Shields ran rampant against Washington, thumping them 7-1, scoring five of them in the first half.
Keith Douglas (3), James Luccock (2), Andy Hay, and Paul Watson scored for Shields, with John Harrison replaying for Washington at 4-0.
Marske United came from behind to draw 1-1 at Whitehaven. Steven Shaw put Whitehaven ahead, with Karl Charlton equalising in the second half.
Birtley had a good away win at Horden, a Chris Tait goal giving them the points.
Gillford Park put their problems behind them and beat bottom club Morpeth 4-0.
