Spennymoor Town moved into clear second in the STL Northern League with a 2-1 home win over fellow title challengers Shildon.
In a fast, end to end game, there were plenty of missed chances until Moors took the lead on 64 minutes, when Craig Ruddy won the ball inside the Shildon box and set up Adam Johnston, who lobbed the advancing keeper Keith Finch.
Moors went 2-0 up on 75 minutes with another goal by Johnston, this time a strike from the edge of the box, but Shildon kept battling away and pulled a goal back on 88 minutes, Gary Brown firing a 35 yarder into the top corner after winning the ball in midfield. And Shildon nearly grabbed a point right at the end, but the ball was cleared off the line.
Esh Winning drew 3-3 with Jarrow Roofing at Waterhouses. Esh led 2-0 at half time with an own goal by Roofing’s Paul Wardle and a shot by Stuart Thompson, but Roofing sub Peter Watling scored a hat trick in 11 minutes to put his side in the lead. However, Esh gained a valuable point in stoppage time when Craig Carr scored from a free kick.
Norton won their local derby by 2-0 at Billingham Town wit hsecond half goals by Jamie Owens and Craig Gott.
Dunston knocked Durham out of the Durham Challenge Cup to move into the semi finals.
City took the lead in the first minute when Amar Purewal made a 40 yard run and scored, and they missed several chances to increase their lead before Dunston levelled on 50 minutes, when City keeper James Winter dropped a cross at the feet of Andy Bulford, who turned the ball home.
Dunston went in front on the hour when Ian Herron pounced on a poor clearance, but City equalied on 63 minutes through Josh Home-Jackson from a David Dowson pass.
But more poor defending on 66 minutes by City allowed Michael Dixon to fire the winner. Dunston join Spennymoor and Norton in the semi finals, with the other semi finalist to be decided from the tie between Gateshead and Sunderland RCA on Wednesday night. North Shields are now in third place in Division Two after their 4-1 home win over bottom club Morpeth.
