Newton Aycliffe manager Alan Oliver hailed his side’s Durham Challenge Cup win over Consett on Wednesday night as one of their best ever.
Aycliffe came back from a goal down to force extra time, and then they won the penalty shootout 4-2 – not a bad performance for a team that’s only in its second Northern league season against the First Division leaders.
“We’re all absolutely delighted,” he said. “It’s not a bad performance beating a team that’s top of the league and doing well. It's our best ever performance in a cup tie.
“The players withstood quite a bit of pressure, but they showed some great spirit to get back into the game, especially in the second half.
“And then they kept their cool in the penalty shootout. Roll on the next round.”
Bishop Auckland also pulled off a surprise 5-0 away win at Shildon in their local derby.
“We had a game plan, and it all clicked into place,” said manager Colin Myers.
“We didn’t have much possession in the first half, but they didn’t have many chances. And in the second half, we hit them on the break. Three of our goals were identical. They’ve had the ball in our defensive third, but we’ve won it, and then broken away. Every single player did his best and had a blinder. It’ll be difficult to leave players out now for our away game at Ashington on Saturday.”
Shildon boss Gary Forrest was less than happy, and blasted: “Our players were disrespectful and let the club down.”
Crook Town are through after beating Washington 2-1 at the Millfield.
Manager Brian Maitland was delighted with the debut of new keeper Graham Pickering, signed from Sunderland RCA.
“He never put a foot wrong, and looked very composed. I thought we could have scored four or five in the first half, but at least we’re through to the next round.”
The draw for the second round will be made in the next few days.
