Holders North Shields are relieved to be still in the FA Vase after they were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Runcorn Town tonight.

Runcorn, from the North West Counties League, had the better of the early play on a heavy pitch, even though one of their players had to go off with a head injury. They hit the bar from 20 yards and missed another good chance, before Shields took the lead on the half hour mark through Gary Ormston from a corner.

But Runcorn deservedly levelled just before half time through Chris Lawton with a header from a free kick.

Shields improved in the second half and put Runcorn under more pressure, but in extra time Paul Shanley and Wayne Bellew both went close for Runcorn, while they also had a Lawton goal from a corner disallowed.
