Consett manager Kenny Lindoe is hoping for a home tie in Monday lunchtime’s fourth round FA Vase draw after beating Marske United 3-2 at Belle View on Saturday.
Not many clubs will fancy playing on Consett’s synthetic surface, even more so if they have to travel there on a day with sub zero temperatures, and if the Steelmen can literally add some steel to their sometimes shaky defence, then they could make quite an impact in the competition.
“On this pitch, I think we can beat anybody because it really suits the way we play, as long as we have our full side out,” he said. “We played away in midweek at Bedlington and lost 6-4 after being 4-1 up, but we wouldn’t have lost 6-4 on our pitch. I would love to have a home draw against foreign opposition instead of playing another Northern League team.
“I was pleased with the win. I had to use all our subs because of injuries and when extra time started I would have taken a draw in the circumstances.”
Consett hit the woodwork three times in the first half through Michael Mackay, Calvin Smith and Luke Sullivan, so they deserved to be in the lead at half time with a header by Mackay from a delightful cross by Sullivan.
Mackay made it 2-0 eight minutes after half time, when he played the ball to the right for Josh Gray to fire low into the middle for Mackay to tap in.
Marske rallied, and pulled a goal back when Josh MacDonald broke down the right and crossed for Jamie Owens to head home.
Marske kept going, and levelled after 88 minutes when Consett keeper Chris Elliott fumbled a free kick, and the ball ran loose for Owens to tap in.
Consett had to use all their subs because of injury before extra time, but they went through on 109 minutes with a delightful free kick by Danny Craggs that flew into the top corner of the net.
Marske manager Carl Jarrett said; “We never really got going until the second half. Consett will be difficult to beat on their own pitch.”
North Shields kept their nerve and won their all Northern League tie 4-2 at Seaham Red Star.
They took the lead after 20 minutes when a shot by Gareth Bainbridge was blocked, and Ben Richardson scored from the loose ball, and they went 2-0 up on 46 minutes when Bainbridge finished off a flowing move. Richardson set up Bainbridge to make it 3-0 on 63 minutes, but Seaham then launched a fightback.
Josh Home-Jackson pulled a goal back, then Adam Johnston scored another from the spot. But Richardson put Shields 4-2 up from a free kick, and two red cards in the space of a minute finished Seaham off. Lewis Wing went for retaliation, and Darren Reay followed him for a foul Seaham midfielder Dennis Knight, whom they signed from West Auckland just a few weeks ago, has joined Newton Aycliffe.
Seaham manager Mark Collingwood said; “We showed great character to come back from 3-0 down, but we were missing five key players.” One of those is top scorer Sonny Andrews, who could be out for the season with knee ligament problems.
North Shields assistant manager Andy Bowman said; “I thought it was a typical cup tie that got quite feisty at times. I thought we were always in control of the game. We were delighted with the victory, because playing Seaham Red Star was the one tie we didn’t want because of past history.”
Dunston UTS, the 2012 winners, edged out four times winners Whitley Bay 2-1 at Hillheads.
Dunston took the lead with a great goal when full back Stephen Harrison cut in from the right and fired into the top corner of the net, and on 39 minutes former Whitley defender fired a second from 25 yards.
Whitley improved when their talisman, Paul Chow, came on the field, and he pulled a goal back from the penalty spot after Peter Watling was fouled – his 39th FA Vase goal. But despite plenty of pressure, Whitley couldn’t score another.
Whitley Bay manager Leon Ryan said; “I’m really disappointed. We didn’t show up in the first half and we gave them an easy lead. We did better in the second half, but our inexperience in certain areas showed massively.”
Dunston UTS manager Billy Irwin said; “It was a great performance by the lads, we deserved to win by a bigger margin.”
Newcastle Benfield lost 2-1 at Chadderton, but they missed a host of chances.
Benfield manager Steve Bowey said; “We had 75 per cent of the play, created 25 chances, and could only put the ball in the net twice. Chadderton were only average, the other Northern League clubs should hope to draw them in the next round.”
Niall Sultan put Chadderton ahead after 10 minutes, but Michael Hoganson equalised from a Paul Brayson assist.
However, Chadderton regained the lead from the penalty spot through Matthew Russell following a foul by keeper Andy Grainger.
It was all Benfield after that, but they couldn’t break through.
“Nothing went right for us. There were plenty of positives with our effort and commitment, but we couldn’t take our chances. If a Northern League team gets Chadderton in the next round, they should put their mortgage on winning.”
Shildon’s game at Shaw Lane Aquaforce was postponed, and has been re-arranged for Tuesday night.
