Shildon have revealed that they have applied to join the Evo-Stik League next season – but they won’t finish in a required top three place if they lose any more thrillers like the best of seven encounter they had at Durham on Saturday.
Much will depend on Shildon’s circumstances and a ground inspection by the EvoStik League, but on the field they will need to avoid more goalscoring displays such as that of Durham striker Callum Patton, who scored all four of his side’s goals.
Shildon manager Gary Forrest said; “We are applying, however we will be completing a thorough analysis before making a final decision. The club is still completing its review on whether to move stadium and this will have an influence on the decision as to when to take promotion assuming we finish in a promotion position.
“We have still not completed the development of the club’s training centre which will mainly be utilised for the academy teams.
“There is a lot of positive work taking place at the club and we are a very ambitious club. However we have followed a very careful growth and development plan over the last few years and will continue to make diligent decisions for the benefit of the club’s long term future.”
Durham took the lead through Patton when he scored from a corner on just four minutes, but Shildon levelled when Darren Richardson deflected Bobby Moore’s shot into the net.
Moore put Shildon into the lead with a terrific volley from a Paul Connor cross, but Patton equalised for Durham when he controlled a pass from Reece Noble and beat Kyle Hayes in the Shildon goal.
Ben Wood then set up Moore for a simple tap in to make it 3-2 to Shildon before half time, but Durham hit back after the break, and after he hit the post, Patton headed his hat trick. There were plenty of chances at both ends, but Durham clinched it when Patton pounced on a mistake by Lee Scroggins and fired past Hayes.
Durham manager Ian Chandler said; “It was a really good performance against a top team. There were chances galore and could have finished 7-6 to us. Real entertainment, it’s about time we got the positive result. Callum was fantastic, he scored four and hit the post as well. He got on the end of most crosses.”
League leaders West Auckland beat ten men Consett 2-0 at the Seagrave Stadium.
There were chances at both ends until West were awarded a penalty on 34 minutes for a foul by Consett defender Michael Pearson on Alex Francis, and was red carded. Robert Briggs scored from the spot after the protests died down.
Steve Richardson missed a good chance to score another, while at the other end West keeper Dan Lowson saved well from Michael Mackay.
But Francis settled West’s nerves with a good shot n 76 minutes, and after that they should have scored more, but Richardson missed a couple of sitters.
Defender Jonathan Gibson has asked to go on the transfer list, while defender Lewis Galpin has been put on the transfer list by the club.
Consett manager Kenny Lindoe said; “A disputed penalty and subsequent sending off on the half hour cost us the game. We battled gamely from then on and their keeper made a great save from Mackay just before they got the clincher. They could have scored more late on as we tired and the gaps opened up.”
West Auckland manager Anth Smith said; “It was important to get a win after last week, especially against a decent Consett side. They put us under a lot of pressure in the first half, but got into it in the second half and had chance after chance.”
Marske United are now second after Jamie Owens inspired them to a 4-1 home win over West Allotment at Mount Pleasant.
Marske took the lead with Owens’ 13th league goal of the season on 23 minutes, when he headed in a corner by Josh McDonald, and he headed another a minute later.
He completed his hat trick by the half hour when he cut in from the left and fired home.
Marske nearly scored a fourth at the other end, when defender David Hillerby tried to clear but hit his own post, but Adam Wheatley score at the correct end before half time from a Danny Brunskill assist.
Allotment improved, and Sean Reid pulled a goal back in the second half.
West Allotment manager Paul Stoneman said; “I’m the first to admit if we’ve been outplayed but believe it or not we were the better side and played some very good football. We switched off for 15 minutes before half time and conceded some really poor goals which we will put right. Apart from that, we played really well. Our keeper picked the ball out of the net four times and did nothing else.”
Marske manager Carl Jarrett said; “We didn’t play our fluent football, but we’re happy with the three points.”
Whitley Bay striker Paul Chow scored four as they easily beat bottom club Crook Town 7-0 at the Millfield.
Whitley took the lead after a few minutes when a shot by Peter Watling was blocked, and former Crook player Robbie Bird scored from a few yards, and then Watling was on the spot before half time after Ryan Keltie’s shot was blocked.
Chow then took over. He scored the third with a curler from the edge of the box, then Watling set him up for the fourth. He completed his hat trick in just 11 minutes from the penalty spot, and after both sides had a man sent off , Chow fired the sixth and Bird finished off the scoring. It is the fourth time that Chow has scored four in a game for Whitley, and he has now scored 269 for the club, only 38 behind record holder Billy Wright.
Crook manager Peter Mulcaster said; “The performance highlighted what is needed to turn the results around – defenders, midfielders and top men are required as a matter of urgency.”
Whitley Bay manager Leon Ryan said; “It was a great win, It was a professional performance and nice to see Chowy back among the goals.”
Dunston UTS, who play Whitley Bay in the Vase this week, lost 1-0 at home to Ashington, the goal scored by Tony Stephenson from an Andrew Johnson pass on 33 minutes. Ashington keeper Connor Grant pulled off some good saves, and Ashington finished with nine men after Stephenson and Glen Taylor were both sent off.
Ashington assistant manager Perry Briggs said; “It was a great hard working performance and we defended really well. I keep saying it, but the referee wasn’t good enough!”
Dunston UTS manager Billy Irwin said; “We did everything but score. They had one shot and scored, it was one of those days.”
Newton Aycliffe moved above West Allotment in fifth bottom on goal difference even though they lost 4-2 at Jarrow Roofing.
Aycliffe took the lead when the Roofing defence failed to clear a Scott Oldfield cross, and Conor Winter turned the ball home, but Roofing levelled when Dan Kirkup headed in Danny Carson’s free kick.
The home side went in front when Malky Morien, who has replaced the departed John Campbell in the side, scored with a shot on the turn after a throw in was flicked on to him. Lewis Teasdale got the third from the spot after he was brought down by Mark Stephenson, but youngster Ryan Cummings quickly pulled a goal back from 25 yards. But Jamie Marshall made the game safe with a few minutes left.
Newton Aycliffe manager Peter Dixon said; “I didn’t think that there was much to choose between the two sides.”
Jarrow Roofing manager Richie McLoughlin said; “It was a difficult game, but we worked hard for a very good three points.”
Billingham Synthonia are still third bottom of the table after they lost 2-1 at home to Guisborough. There were chances at both ends until the 72nd minute when former Synner Danny Earl pounced on a rebound and beat James Briggs in the Synners goal, and two minutes later he grabbed another.
Recent signing Tom Atkinson pulled a goal back for Synners, who are five points adrift of safety.
Guisborough manager Chris Hardy said; “In a game that's didn't see an awful lot in terms of goalscoring opportunities, I thought for the opening 45 minutes we controlled possession without having the required cutting edge.
“Second half, the opening exchanges were quite scrapping we did however take the lead and doubled it soon after with a brace from Earl.
“At 2-0 I was hopeful that we could have seen the game out and enjoyed the remaining period left, but due to a defensive error which made the scoreline 2-1 this created a tense remaining 10 minutes of the game even though we had a perfectly good goal disallowed due to some head scratching officiating.”
Newcastle Benfield drew 2-2 with Penrith. Grant Davidson and Connor Thomson in turn put Penrith into the lead, with Dan Taylor and Paul Brayson equalising.
Newcastle Benfield manager Steve Bowey said; “We shaded the game, created some good chances. We’re happy with a point.”
In the second division, leaders Seaham Red Star are now unbeaten in 17 league matches after they beat Darlington RA 5-0. There was only one goal in it, scored by David Palmer, at half time, but after the break, Seaham took over in the second half, and Palmer completed his hat trick, with Liam McBryde and Lewis Wing adding further goals.
However, one blow for Seaham was an injury to striker Sonny Andrews, who could miss this week’s big Vase tie against North Shields.
Seaham manager Mark Collingwood said; “We were superb, we looked a constant threat going forward and it was a great result. Having said that the injury that Sonny Andrews picked up spoiled my afternoon, hopefully it won’t be as bad as feared.”
Darlington RA manager Warren Moncur said; “We coped really well for 55 minutes and were only one down and had a few chances to equalise. But once they got a second on the hour, our shape went and they always looked like creating and scored three more in the last 25 minutes. I can honestly say that they’re the best side in this division by a long way.”
Norton are level with them but with a worse goal difference after beating Willington 3-1 at Station Road.
After a goalless first half, Nicky Martin put Norton into the lead after 56 minutes, then Rocky Andrews got the second from the spot. Martin made it 3-0, before Marc Bell pulled a goal back for Willington, who gave an outing to 16 year old full back Jordan Burke.
Norton are unbeaten in twelve home league games this season.
Norton manager Andy Campbell said; “I’m delighted with three points. We played really well in the second half and I’m pleased to keep the run going, especially with Team North losing.”
Willington manager Rob Lee said; “I thought 3-1 didn’t reflect the game, we were as good as Norton. We created several chances and only took one. We lost to two defensive mistakes and a dubious penalty – we thought it should have been a free kick just outside the area.”
Washington swopped places with third placed Team Northumbria after winning 4-2 at the University. Ben Dibb-Fuller and Declan Stokle in turn put TN into the lead, with Mark Davison scoring in between. But Washington had a good second half, and Davison went on to score a hat trick, with James Fairley scoring the other. Davison has now got 27 league goals this season.
Washington manager Steve Hutchinson said; “Team North are very well organised and disciplined side and we knew that we were in for a tough afternoon. The boys showed how good they were by twice going behind and coming back, pushing on for what turned out to be a very comprehensive win.”
Hebburn jumped above Darlington RA into fifth by beating Billingham Town 1-0, thanks to a first half headed goal by Channon North, who also missed a penalty late in the game. North has now got 28 goals this season.
Hebburn manager Scott Oliver said; “We dominated the whole game, and how we never won by more is beyond me, although their keeper was excellent. When Channon missed a penalty it was a very nervy last few minutes. A clean sheet was very welcome.”
Billingham Town manager Darren Trotter said; “I thought we did ok today with a very inexperienced team. We hung in like you need to at this level and possibly could have got a draw at the end.”
Heaton Stannington are still well in touch with the leaders thanks to a good 2-1 away win at Thornaby, who lost their unbeaten home record. Mike Waugh gave Heaton the lead, but Curtis Edwards levelled early in the second half. Brian Dodsworth got the winner from the spot with just five minutes left.
Heaton Stannington assistant manager Geoff Walker said; “It was a great battling performance with six regulars missing. A draw was probably a fair result, but it’s nice to win ugly.”
Northallerton manager Steve Skinner suffered his first league defeat since taking charge when they lost 1-0 at Ryton and Crawcrook for whom Will Forsyth scored.
Northallerton manager Steve Skinner said; “It was a game of two halves. They took their one chance in the first half. And in the second half it was all us, but we didn’t get the rub of the green. I’m gutted with the result, but we were down to the bare bones and lads who turned up gave their all, so I was pleased with their workrate.”
Second bottom Esh Winning shared a point in an eight goal thriller at Alnwick. Esh were 2-0 down and then 3-2 up, but needed a late goal to give them a point. Paul Basey and Dean Sinclair both scored two apiece, while Adam Shanks (2), Ross Straughan and Tony Brown scored for Alnwick. The Northumberland side has scored four goals in three recent matches, and not won any of them.
Esh Winning manager Chris Blakelock said; “I thought we started slow and gave away two goals. Then we got the ball down and started to play and we were outstanding after that. We created chance after chance, and only two very bad penalty decisions meant the points were shared.”
Bottom club Brandon were thumped 7-0 at Whickham, for whom new striker, Daniel O’Reilly scored a hat trick on his debut. Steve Aiston (2), Rudi Nellis and Joel Howorth scored the other goals.
Managerless Tow Law lost 4-1 at Birtley, even though they took the lead through Alastair Wilson. Birtley missed a few chances before they equalised through Kai Hewitson. Former Tow Law player Derek Waters made it 2-1, before Scott Watson scored twice late in the game.
Lawyers remain third bottom, three points above Esh.
Birtley manager Tony Boakes said: “We were poor in the first half, but we were much better in the second half and scored some good goals.”
South Shields picked up the points by 4-1 at Stokesley thanks to a good second half. Stokesley took the lead through Ged Richardson, but Shields levelled through James Talbot. 16 year old Ryan Bolam then put Shields in front, and Talbot scored twice more late in the game.
Stokesley manager Nicky Ward said; “It was a battle on a heavy pitch. We struggled squad wise with virtually no bench. The lads gave it their all. 1-1 at 80 minutes and ran out of steam. Great performances, great performances from Kris Kamara and Ryan Grier coming back from long lay offs but no complaints.”
There were four games postponed because of waterlogged pitches – in the first division at Bedlington, Morpeth and Sunderland RCA, and in the second division at Ryhope CW.
In the EvoStik League premier division, Whitby lost 1-0 at Ashton United, and Blyth beat Witton Albion 2-1 with goals by Dan Maguire and Matthew Wade.
