Spennymoor defeated a strong Gateshead side that included eight players with Football League experience by 2-1 in the Durham Challenge Cup at the Brewery Field last night.

Moors had the better of the early chances, with Sonny Andrews and Chay Liddle off target, and they deservedly took the lead on 29 minutes when Anthony Peacock was left completely unmarked on the six yard line to volley in a right wing corner by Keith Graydon.

Gateshead levelled six minutes later when Jack Gurr crossed perfectly from the right for former Darlington striker Liam Hatch to head in from six yards.

Hatch and Jamie Chandler put chances wide in the second half, and after a scramble in which Sonny Andrews and Peacock both had shots blocked, Moors regained the lead with a perfectly weighted ball by Andrews for Dan Taylor to run on to and fire into the bottom corner.

West Auckland came from behind with ten men to beat Billingham Synthonia 6-2 at the Seagraves Stadium in the other quarter final.

West took the lead on 16 minutes when Mattie Moffat headed in a Robbie Briggs free kick, but their keeper Jordan Nixon gifted Synners the equaliser when he raced out of his area and missed the ball, allowing Michael Sweet a simple tap in. West full back Phil Gray was dismissed on the hour for a last man foul, and Kieran Edwards scored from the free kick.

Deep into stoppage time, Moffat was fouled by Thomas Bott, and John Campbell scored from the spot.

In extra time, West took full control, Moffat made it 3-2 with a shot from the edge of the box into the bottom corner, and he completed his hat trick from a Campbell pass on 107 minutes. Briggs set up Campbell to make it 5-2, and then he completed his own hat trick with a 20 yarder.

In the Brooks Mileson Northern League Cup, Bishop Auckland beat Team Northumbria 3-1 at Heritage Park. Bishops took the lead when Johnny Butler scored from a rebound after Kieran Megran’s shot was blocked, and he made it 2-0 from 15 yards from a Danny Brunskill pass on 34 minutes. Brunskill scored the third on 63 minutes, with Liam McNamara pulling a goal back.

Ashington beat league leaders Celtic Nation, with goals by Darren Lough and Andrew Johnson in the first half.

In the ENL First Division, Consett drew 2-2 with Penrith, both sides finishing with ten men. Aris Guerin-Lokonga headed Consett into the lead from a David Brown cross, but then they had Carl Piecha dismissed for a last man foul on Michael Reed, but Jordan Little missed from the spot.

Little was sent off with 12 minutes left, but Cameron Wilson levelled for Penrith with nine minutes left. Steven Rigg scored from 40 yards out with the wind behind him to make it 2-1, but in stoppage time Michael Mackay fired the equaliser.

In the ENL Second Division, Jarrow Roofing are now fourth after winning 3-1 at Tow Law.

Roofing took the lead when Kieran Martin crossed for Dan Kirkup to head in on 13 minutes, and they went 2-0 up midway through the second half when Anth Myers sent Andy Appleby racing clear to score. Appleby got the third from a rebound seven minutes later, and on 75 minutes Scott Thompson pulled a goal back in a goalmouth scramble.

Darlington RA’s promotion hopes have now gone after losing 3-0 at home to Whickham, while Chester-le-Street beat Willington by the same scoreline.
