Whitley Bay manager Ian Chandler says that they want to return to Wembley again after they trounced Causeway United 6-0 in the third round of the FA Carlsberg Vase on Saturday.
Three of the players who played a major part in Whitley’s three successive Vase wins, Lee Kerr, Paul Chow and Paul Robinson, were all amongst the goals as they made their intentions very clear, and Chandler said: “We went out in the quarter finals last season, and I think that hurt the players so much that they want to go back to Wembley. We dominated the game from start to finish, and it’s getting exciting again.”
Brad Brooking set the tone of the game early on, charging through the Causeway defence to open the scoring, then veteran Paul Chow, the record scorer in the competition, fired the second. Before half time, it was virtually game over when Paul Robinson got the third.
Chow finished off a flowing move for the fourth, and then completed his hat trick to take his number of Vase goals for Whitley in the Vase to an amazing total of 37. Lee Kerr finished off the visitors from a Chris Fawcett cross giving him 29 Vase goals.
Holders Dunston are into the next round, winning 2-0 at Norton United in Staffordshire.
Andy Bulford, who scored both goals in the Wembley win over West Auckland, fired into the bottom right hand corner after 5 minutes , and in the second half Lee McAndrew crossed for Lewis Teasdale to score with a glancing header. Norton had a man sent off for elbowing a Dunston player.
Manager Billy Irwin said: “We were well below par. It wasn’t our best performance by any means but at least we’re through. We’ll settle for a home draw now, but we want to avoid the other Northern League teams.”
A last minute winner by Andrew Johnson earned Ashington a 2-1 victory over AFC Rushden and Diamonds at Woodhorn lane.
The Colliers took an 8th minute lead when former Darlington defender Chris Hope turned an Andrew Johnson cross into his own net, but Rushden levelled through Jake Newman just before half time.
Both sides had several chances to go into the lead and each had a man sent off, but with seconds left Johnson put Ashington into the next round with a left foot shot.
Assistant manager Perry Briggs said: ““It was what cup games are all about. The match had everything. The players dug in right to the end.”
The game between Spennymoor and Billingham Synthonia was postponed, and has been re-arranged for tomorrow night. The tie between Shildon and Parkgate was also postponed and will now be played next Saturday, weather permitting.
The fourth round draw, which now goes national, will be made around lunchtime today.
