Bishop Auckland moved into the second round of the Durham Challenge Cup wit ha 4-2 home win over South Shields last night.

Shields took the lead with a first minute header by Tony Burnell, but Bishops levelled in the second minute through Kyle Swankie from 6 yards. Andy Johnson put Bishops 2-1 up from ten yards after 10 minutes, then Chris Feasey fired past James Cleminson for the equaliser.

Jamie Harwood split the Shields defence for Dan Hawkins to fire Bishops into the lead again, and then Johnson scored the fourth from another Harwood pass.

Spennymoor easily won 3-0 at Newton Aycliffe. Moors took the lead with a header by Steve Richardson on 8 minutes, and Andrew Stephenson got the second with an angled shot just before half time. Richardson scored the third from close range after 81 minutes.

Shildon beat Wearside League Darlington CB 4-2 at Dean Street. Ben Wood, Richard Flynn and Robbie Briggs made it 3-0 by half time, and Adam Johnston got the fourth on 54 minutes. Jordan Steel and Dan McLachlan pulled two back for CB.

Billingham Synthonia just got the better of Esh Winning by 4-3 at Waterhouses. Andy Jennings gave Synners a half time lead, but Esh stormed back to lead through Craig Mickle and Dean Thexton. Synners levelled through Jamie Blyth, but Esh recovered to go back in front through Stuart Thompson. But Synners won it in a storming finish through Danny Newby and Chay Liddle.

Norton had a morale boosting 2-1 home win over Hartlepool. Dale Mulligan put them in front on 8 minutes, then Anthony Hume made it 2-0 on 56 minutes. Zak Boagey scored a late consolation for Norton with three minutes left.

Crook won 4-2 at Boldon CA from the Wearside League. They were level at 2-2 until Warren Byrne and David Paul scored late in the game for Crook.

In the ENL, Bedlington are now four points clear of their closest rivals after they beat Newcastle Benfield 4-0. A Benfield defender put through his own goal after just two minutes, and four minutes later Paul Brayson got another. Brayson took his total in the league this season to 16, when he scored twice in the second half, making him the division’s top scorer.
