Dirk Kuyt's controversial penalty and a late strike from Luis Suarez handed Liverpool victory at Sunderland.
The Dutchman claimed his 10th goal of the season from the spot 12 minutes before the break after John Mensah had been adjudged to have felled Jay Spearing inside the area, although replays suggested the initial contact had taken place outside.
Suarez blasted home a second from a tight angle with 13 minutes remaining despite Sunderland enjoying the better of the possession, although goalkeeper Simon Mignolet had earlier pulled off fine saves to deny Suarez and Spearing before defender John Mensah was dismissed for a professional foul.
