WE asked The Legends, which players would be at the top of your summer shopping list?

BERNIE SLAVEN:

There is one realistic target who Boro should go for – James Beattie.

I was pleased to see Gordon Strachan sign Andy Halliday this week. By all accounts he is a very promising winger. I wouldn’t put too much pressure on him and I’ve already seen him being compared with the likes of Adam Johnson and Stewart Downing. That is premature, although I expect to see him do well.

But we also need some experience up front. I could see Beattie and Scott McDonald forming a very effective partnership at this level.

Beattie is 32 and, reading between the lines, there is friction between him and Tony Pulis, his manager at Stoke City.

The time looks right for him to move on and if Strachan has the money to pay Beattie’s wages then he would fit the bill nicely.

He has everything we need: strength, ability to lead the line, a goal threat and experience.

He is one target that would excite me as a fan.

BOB MONCUR:

To win games next season we need a proven top-flight goalscorer.

My priority would be to get someone who can get us 12-15 goals.

I know we have Andy Carroll and Shola Ameobi.

But Carroll is untested in the Premier League and we know what Shola can and can’t do against top-quality defenders.

Harris Vuckic is very highly-rated and he would be the wild card, but he is very young, while Peter Lovenkrands is an excellent support striker.

So, I’d like to see Chris Hughton get a tried and tested front man.

I’d also like to see us get someone to create things in the middle of the park.

I have seen reports that clubs are interested in Graeme Dorrans at West Brom and I would be happy to see us go for him.

We need a player to offer us something a bit different, pick a pass and drive the team forward.

Smith and Nolan have done well but I’d be happy to see Danny Guthrie given more of a central role next season.

He is not a rightmidfielder in my opinion, but when he’s played in the middle he’s been outstanding.

Guthrie and Dorrans would work well.

At the back we will probably get away with it. Fabricio Coloccini has had a terrific season and I’m impressed by Mike Williamson.

More creativity in the side is vital.

MICKY HORSWILL:

I’ll give you two names that Steve Bruce should go for – Stephen Ireland and Eidur Gudjohnsen.

It’s all very well going for bargains, and Bruce has done well in the past, trawling the South American market to find unknown players who’ve gone on to do the business. But that is a risk and I would rather see us go for players who’ve been there and done it in the Premier League.

Ireland at Manchester City is a great worker and would bring something that’s lacking from our midfield – goals.

Gudjohnsen is a quality player.

You need four good strikers if you hope to do anything in the Premier League.

He would offer us an option of the bench and Darren Bent would relish having someone like him picking passes and making intelligent runs.

They would be two great acquisitions.
