Chesterfield 1 Hartlepool Utd 3

DANNY Wilson, the Hartlepool United manager, didn't have far to go last night after securing a simple victory at Chesterfield.

Wilson still lives in the town where he played in the early 1980s and will have been home in time for a celebratory pint in his local after seeing his side coast to victory.

Two goals from James Brown and a strike from David Foley earned a spot in Saturday's draw for round two of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.

Forced to field the majority of players who have appeared in League One this season under competition rules, Wilson made as many changes as he could.

But they didn't disrupt the flow as Pools made enjoyed another victory amid an encouraging and successful start to the season.

It was 20 minutes in before there was action of any note, when Derek Niven's volley was pushed out by keeper Jan Budtz.

In Pools first foray forward, Gary Liddle's slide-rule pass played Joel Porter in on goal, he held off defender Janos Kovaks and looked destined to net his second goal in as many games but he pushed the ball wide of the post.

But David Foley showed how it was done on 35 minutes. From a similar position to Porter, this time after taking Richard Barker's pass, he clinically rifled his shot into the net.

Foley had appeared as an early substitute for Matty Robson who suffered a groin strain, and the strike was his third in cup competitions this season after nabbing two in the Carling Cup win at Scunthorpe.

His first career goal in the same competition last season and he could have scored another shortly after this strike.

Porter's shot was saved by Barry Roche and Foley's strong follow up was tipped over by the keeper.

Just 85 seconds into the second period and Godwin Antwi stretched on the line to keep out goalbound Josh Law shot after a combination of Budtz and Ali Gibb kept out Adam Rooney.

But Brown made it two with a goal deserving of a better stage than this competition.

A short corner worked its way to the edge of the area and he motored through three defenders before a delicate angled chip sailed across goal and into the far side of the net.

Brown made it three soon after, Michael Mackay and Foley combining well on the left and the low cross was turned in at the near post.

Mackay had an opening to net his first goal since turning professional after being spotted in the Northern League. He left Kevin Gray in his wake inside the penalty area and his shot was smothered by Roche.

After Josh Law's free-kick smashed against a post, the home side got one back through Wayne Allison.

But Pools saw the game out with ease as they dominated possession
