Match Report: West Ham United 1 Newcastle United 0
Newcastle United's winning run came crashing to an end as they slumped to a 1-0 defeat at West Ham.
Aaron Cresswell's fortuitous second-half goal settled things, with the defender slotting the ball past Rob Elliot after Cheikhou Kouyate sliced a shot into his direction.
To make things worse for the Magpies, they were forced to finish the game with ten men after Moussa Sissoko picked up two bookings in the space of two minutes and was dismissed with 14 minutes left.
Sissoko will miss Tuesday's trip to Burnley, as will fellow midfielder Jack Colback, who picked up his fifth booking of the season at Upton Park.
Alan Pardew made three changes for the trip to the East End, with Rob Elliot replacing Tim Krul, Cheick Tiote coming in for Ryan Taylor and Yoan Gouffran preferred to Remy Cabella.
Chances were at a premium for both sides in the first half, with neither team really doing enough to test the opposition goalkeeper.
Ayoze Perez failed to find the target from a decent position, while Sammy Ameobi came close with a first-half shot that whistled wide.
West Ham were no more fluent before the interval, although Mike Williamson survived a strong penalty appeal when he appeared to handle the ball in the area.
Colback wasted a decent opening at the start of the second half, before West Ham broke the deadlock 11 minutes after the interval.
Kouyate miscued his shot, and having surged past Tiote to break into the area, Cresswell was able to slot the ball past Elliot.
Newcastle still had time to get back into the game, but their chances suffered a serious blow when Sissoko was dismissed. The midfielder's first booking was for kicking the ball away, and a minute or so later, he was sent off when he clattered into former Newcastle striker Andy Carroll.
Pardew introduced Cabella and Papiss Cisse in an attempt to change things, but West Ham would have doubled their lead in the closing stages had Elliot not produced a fine save to deny Mauro Zarate.
