Yorkshire v Sussex (County Championship) : Day Three
PAKISTANI pace ace Rana Naved-ulHassan destroyed Yorkshire's batting by taking seven for 62 on the third day of the Championship match at Headingley yesterday.
The former Pudsey Congs fast bowler's dynamic display sent Yorkshire tumbling to 221 all out in their second innings, which left Sussex to make 193 for victory.
But they experienced some anxious moments themselves to close on 139 for five with a further 54 wanted.
Naved was able to boast match figures of 11 for 48, the most wickets by a Sussex bowler inside Yorkshire since George Cox claimed 12 for 110 at Sheffield in 1907.
The man that Yorkshire ignored has now taken an astonishing 71 first-class wickets in 11 matches for Sussex since joining them last July.
He plagued Yorkshire at the beginning of their innings, when they crumbled to 40 for four, and again later on with a four-for-26 spell as Yorkshire's last five wickets toppled for 24 in just 39 balls.
Between these two collapses, Yorkshire were well served by Michael Lumb and Darren Lehmann, who battered the bowling in an entertaining stand of 136 in 34 overs in which nobody was punished more severely than Pakistan leg-spinner Mushtaq Ahmed.
Lehmann blasted him for three big sixes, all over mid-wicket, while the stylish Lumb stroked three fours in five balls, all along the ground. Mushtaq leaked 24 runs in his first two overs and he continued to be expensive with final figures of none for 79 off 11 overs.
A second century in consecutive matches appeared inevitable for Lehmann until the Australian drove Naved to cover, where he was caught by Luke Wright for a dashing 87 off 105 balls with seven fours and three sixes.
Five overs later, Lumb's stumps were smashed back by Jason Lewry after he had made a cultured 69 from 135 deliveries with nine boundaries.
Naved and Lewry quickly ripped their way through the rest of the batting but Sussex were soon struggling themselves as Hoggard reduced them to 26 for two, dismissing Richard Montgomerie lbw and having Mike Yardy caught behind.
At the end of his spell, Hoggard left the field for five overs to have ice-pack treatment on a bruise on his right knee, the legacy of a blow from Naved while batting, but Yorkshire physiotherapist, Scott McAllister, said the injury was not serious and would not keep him out of next week's opening Test between England and Sri Lanka at Lord's.
Murray Goodwin batted positively until his fierce drive at Tim Bresnan was caught at point by Richard Dawson and Jason Gillespie produced a lifter to find the edge of the stubborn Carl Hopkinson's bat.
A shrewd piece of captaincy saw Lehmann enter the attack and in his first over he had Chris Adams superbly stumped by Simon Guy for 44 to edge Yorkshire back in the game but they still ended the day second favourites.
Coach Peter Moores has hailed England A's superb display which put Sri Lanka on the verge of defeat a week before the opening Test at Lord's.
The A side performed with bat and ball on the second day at Worcester to leave Sri Lanka struggling on 68 for five by the close, still 12 runs away from making the hosts bat again.
Resuming on 96 for two, England A were dismissed for 259 to claim an 80run first innings lead and then claimed three wickets in the final eight overs of the day to leave Sri Lanka heading for defeat.
