MARK Stoneman defied the pain of his thigh strain to complete his first half-century since the middle of last season on an otherwise frustrating day for Durham.
Although Stoneman fell for 64 in the pursuit of quick runs, Durham achieved maximum batting points by advancing to 403 for seven in two short sessions of play at Edgbaston.
Gordon Muchall acted as Stoneman’s runner, but had a fairly quiet time in the half hour’s play which was possible in the afternoon as the young left-hander dealt mainly in boundaries.
He had hit seven fours when he reached his 80-ball 50 with a hooked six off left-armer Neil Carter, but was finally caught at deep square leg off Chris Woakes.
Callum Thorp then brought up the 400 as he got off the mark by cover driving Woakes for four and Durham had added 41 runs in 30 minutes when bad light intervened with Ian Blackwell on 139.
Resuming on 107 in the morning, Blackwell twice drove Woakes to the cover boundary in the first over and advanced from 107 to 129, while Stoneman moved on from 21 to 37 before the rain arrived after 50 minutes.
Other than when Stoneman edged Woakes just short of first slip on 27 and 51 there were no alarms for Durham.
After play resumed at 4.15 it was something of a surprise when bad light drove them off as the batsmen were clearly seeing the ball well. But it wasn’t long before the rain returned and play was abandoned at 5.30, leaving Durham to decide overnight whether to declare.
