YORKSHIRE lost their second Twenty20 Cup match to Lancashire inside four days last night, this time in front of a packed crowd at Headingley.
At Old Trafford on Tuesday Yorkshire scored just 105-8, and on their home patch they only bettered it by six runs.
South African Jacques Rudolph top scored with 38, including two fours and one six, as the tentative Tykes looked haunted by the memory of what happened in Manchester on the way to 111-8.
Perhaps this was not as explosive a bowling performance from the Red Rose as it was the other night, but they oozed confidence. Captain Glen Chapple returned 2- 14 from four overs, while Sajid Mahmood recorded 2-17 from his allocation.
England’s recent World Twenty20 pick Adil Rashid claimed 1-25, but Steven Croft’s 40 not out ensured his side won by five wickets with five balls to spare.
The White Rose, who face Derbyshire at Chesterfield tomorrow, made a slow start to their innings after Anthony McGrath won the toss and elected to bat.
They did reach 15-0 after two overs thanks to three boundaries from opener Andrew Gale, but stalled afterwards as they reached 53-2 at the end of the tenth.
McGrath was bowled for seven by Mahmood in the fifth over to leave the score 31-1 and Gale was run out for 21 off 24 by Francois du Plessis from mid-wicket three later.
Michael Vaughan looked in decent touch, but he pulled Chapple down the throat of Mahmood for 16 – the score 68- 3 in the 12th – and Rich Pyrah was then bowled for a golden duck round his legs by du Plessis’ leg-spinners.
Rudolph upped the ante somewhat, but returning England all-rounder Tim Bresnan was outfoxed by Mahmood’s slow bouncer. Bresnan flicked a comfortable catch to Gareth Cross behind the stumps, and the hosts were 87-5 in the 16th.
Rudolph clobbered Gary Keedy into the West Stand for the first six of the night to bring up the 100 in the 18th over, but his 33-ball stay at the crease was ended as he tried to repeat the dose next ball.
The South African top edged Keedy to Chapple at wide mid-off before Rashid was run out for two in the next over.
Only Rana Naved-ul-Hasan could seemingly recover a tale of woe from 103-7 in the 19th, but even the cavalier Pakistani failed to wield the willow.
Opener Paul Horton then flew out of blocks, hitting five boundaries to help his side reach 49-1 after six overs of their reply.
England’s Rashid provided the first real moment for Yorkshire to smile about by bowling Tom Smith in a tidy first over, the fifth of the innings, that went for just two.
And fellow spinner David Wainwright (2-21) later removed Horton for 29 off 16 balls and du Plessis in consecutive balls to leave the score at 63-3 in the eighth.
Deon Kruis and Rana picked up consolatory wickets, but Croft ensured his side’s victory was a pretty simple one.
