MICHAEL Vaughan failed in his bid to give the England selectors a nudge in his one opportunity ahead of the naming of the first Test squad of the summer.

Former captain Vaughan fell for 12 in his appearance for MCC against county champions Durham at Lord’s.

National selector Geoff Miller reveals the squad for the first Test against West Indies next weekend and Vaughan’s next opportunity will be for Yorkshire against Durham at the Riverside next week.

The 34-year-old began the 2009 season intent on securing the vacant No 3 spot in the Test team for the Ashes.

Batting rival Ian Bell also failed as MCC limped to 126 for seven before bad light the season’s rain-ruined curtain raiser.

But the man who dismissed Vaughan, former Headingley colleague Mitch Claydon – an Australian now qualified for England by virtue of his British passport – has no doubt who the Aussies would rather face.

‘‘He is a class player, I saw that when I was playing for Yorkshire, so I am sure they would rather see an England side without him,’’ Claydon said of Vaughan.

‘‘He’s a big-game player. He proved that the last time the Ashes were here.’’ Vaughan began watchfully, only to perish in an infuriating manner, flashing at a long hop.

‘‘It’s not how I would have liked to get it, but short and wide will do,’’ said Claydon. ‘‘I had a plan to pitch it up. But I couldn’t get the ball out of my hand, being nervous.”

Claydon, 26, has enjoyed different success with the short stuff against Vaughan in the past.

‘‘The first year I trialled for Yorkshire in 2005 he was there for the first part of the summer,’’ he explained.

‘‘My first training session at Headingley, he whipped it off his legs and I thought he said ‘Give us one’.

‘‘So I ran in and bounced him and knocked him off his feet. He had actually said ‘That’s one’.’’ When Vaughan does battle with Durham again, an attack potent enough to make the most of the gloomy Lord’s conditions will be bolstered by Steve Harmison.

‘‘He played brilliantly against us last year at Headingley when it was Vaughan v Harmison to a large extent,’’ said Durham coach Geoff Cook.

‘‘He ended up getting 72 before Stephen got him out. If Stephen plays again I am sure it will be another big contest.’’ Vaughan made a swift exit from Lord’s, where he was hoping to let his batting do his talking.

Bell also fell for 12, one of Callum Thorp’s quartet of victims.

Bell will now be hoping for better weather as Warwickshire begin their Division One return in the County Championship against Somerset this week.

Umpires Jeremy Lloyds and Neil Bainton dictated that play could begin at 1pm, following an early lunch, and Durham’s declaration allowed the representative side the possibility of 75 overs before the close.

But they were five down at tea, after Thorp claimed four for 15 from 13 overs.

MCC captain Robert Key was turned around by a delivery from Thorp which squirted low to gully off the outside edge.

The other opener, Worcestershire’s Stephen Moore, was undone by a big outswinger.

Bell, 27 on Saturday, was then the first of two wickets in the 29th over of the innings.

He followed one which left him in the air moments before James Foster was trapped leg before by a straighter delivery.

Early in the final session- Adil Rashid had his off-stump tumbled by a full, swinging delivery from Liam Plunkett.

Tim Bresnan then fell leg before to provide a deserved success for Graham Onions, shortly before hands were shaken on a stalemate.

Earlier, Durham pulled out of their first innings on 311 for four.
