ALAN PARDEW has defended Newcastle United's decision not to pay over the odds for experienced defensive cover last month despite mounting injury problems after the international break.
The Magpies' hectic start to the campaign ended with growing frustration in the treatment room at the club's Darsley Park training complex.
It has been confirmed that first choice goalkeeper Tim Krul will miss the next two or three games because of the elbow problem picked up on duty for Holland.
But Newcastle have also ruled out captain Fabricio Coloccini of this Mondays trip to Everton with the hamstring complaint suffered on his travels with Argentina. Key midfielder Cheik Tiote will also be missing with a similar injury picked up with the Ivory Coast.
The latest injuries follow recent news Danny Simpson will be missing for a few weeks with hamstring trouble and Ryan Taylor is unlikely to figure for a number of months after cruciate knee ligament surgery.
It means Pardew is having to seriously consider including untested centre-back Remi Streete in the Newcastle squad for Mondays trip to Everton, along with James Tavernier.
And the Newcastle boss thinks the likes of Streete and Tavernier would not have been in his thinking had they added a new defender to his ranks during the summer, with Twente's Douglas and Lille's Mathieu Debuchy both targeted.
"You have to look at a football club as a whole and there has to be a route to the first team otherwise you're not going to progress as a club," said Pardew. "I've opened up the route, especially with the Europa League, and told them Come and take your chance.
"This year I think is a year for the younger players to break through. Now if they don't break through I might take a different policy next year but it is a great opportunity to break through with all the games we've got.
"But the (Shane) Fergusons, the (Sammy) Ameobis, the (Haris) Vuckics, Remi Streete, Tavernier - they've got to make their move, this is the year to make it. Rob Elliot (third-choice goalkeeper) as well."
Streete is unlikely to start at Goodison Park, but the mere fact the South Shields -born defender is being talked about highlights the lack of options Pardew has available to him. The Newcastle boss, however, sees no reason to be worried.
"I felt at the start of the year, when we looked at the centre-half situation, that bringing someone in would stand in the way of two players with great futures at the club - Tavernier and Remi Streete," said Pardew.
"Now Remi Streete, I was hoping our injuries would stay fit for the next two or three months because he isn't quite ready yet. Unfortunately that hasn't happened because Colo has been injured but it's only a short-term injury and we've got players and that's what they're paid for - to come and play at this level. Somewhere down the line we may have to call on those guys and I think they'll do well."
Hearing news of both Coloccini and Krul's latest problems angered Pardew earlier in the week - and he is still calling for change.
The Newcastle manager sees no reason why there cant be up-to-the-minute news from international managers relayed back to clubs about players and their training procedures.
Krul damaged his elbow in training with Holland the day after playing for his country and that followed on from Coloccini returning to Tyneside with his hamstring strain.
"I just feel - and have always felt it, it's not new - that as managers, we should know what the players are doing at international level. I once suggested it to Sven-Goran Eriksson," said Pardew.
"I would like to know what work they're doing and with the technology we've got today, the GPRS systems and everything else, we should have reports sent to see what mileage they've done, how they've been training and what minutes they've done.
"I don't see what the problem with that is. I think for a national team - whether it's Uganda, United States of America or England - we should have that report.
"Tim trained after the game, which he's never done before. I just found that a bit strange "
As well as calling on experienced shot-stopper Steve Harper to replace Krul in the next couple of games at least, Pardew is hoping there will be positive news on Coloccinis fitness after the trip to Goodison Park.
Pardew said: "It's completely separate to anything else he had over the summer and he doesn't have an ongoing issue with his hamstring, it's purely that he's pulled his hamstring. We're hoping it's two to three weeks rather than three to four."
