DURHAM needed a run-out to break a sixth-wicket stand of 106, but the man responsible for his partner’s demise, Ben Brown, went on to make an unbeaten 76 in a total of 211.
Brown is the latest in a long list of Sussex wicketkeeper-batsmen to make runs against Durham, including Andrew Hodd, who scored a century at Hove three years ago. He has now joined Yorkshire because he couldn’t oust Brown, and neither could Durham.
He made batting look easy and Durham will be pleased to have dismissed Sussex in two sessions on what looks the best pitch of the season.
South African all-rounder Kirk Wernars was three short of his career-best when he was run out for 50.
Brown had just reached 50 off 59 balls when he drove into the covers and went for a run, only for Wernars to be stranded by Michael Richardson’s diving stop. He parried the ball to Keaton Jennings, whose throw completed the run-out.
The 6ft 9in Will Adkin hung around long enough to add 25 with Brown before the last four wickets went down for 13 runs.
Callum Thorp removed Adkins and another left-hander, Lewis Hatchett, through edged catches and Scott Brothwick had Steve Magoffin lbw. Monty Panesar was run out for a duck when called back for a second run to deep mid-wicket.
He is not exactly Usain Bolt and was beaten by Dale Benkenstein ’s throw.
