ANDY Murray has capped the most memorable summer of British sport by winning the US Open.
The Scot won an epic battle with Novak Djokivic, beating the Serbian in a five-set match lasting almost five hours - 7-6 (12-10), 7-5, 2-6, 3-6, 6-2.
Murray is Britain's first Grand Slam winner since Fred Perry 76 years ago, weeks after he won Olympic gold at Wimbledon, where he had previously lost the men's singles final. This was his fifth Grand Slam final.
The opening set lasted almost 90 minutes in an epic scrap and the final set ended with both players feeling the affects of a drawn-out and historical battle, Djokovic coming back from two sets down to level at 2-2 and force a final set, which Murray controlled from the first game when he broke his opponent's serve.
Djokovic said: "It wasn't to be, but I want to congratulate Andy on his first Grand Slam, he deserves it. I gave my all.''
Murray said: "It was incredible tricky conditions and it was tough mentally. I don't know how I came through at the end.''
In paying tribute to coach Ivan Lendl, he said: "He is one of the greatest players of all, it's great to have him and everyone else who has been there from the start.''
Murray wins almost $1.9m US.
