England Under-21 manager Stuart Pearce has warned there can be no complacency among his free-scoring squad as they look to stay on course for the 2013 European Championship finals.

The Young Lions coasted to a 5-0 thrashing of Iceland at the Weston Homes Community Stadium in Colchester, although three late goals - including a quickfire brace from Aston Villa youngster Gary Gardner - made the final scoreline more flattering.

England are now five points clear at the top of Group Eight and another win in Belgium on Monday night would see them all but secure a place in the play-offs.

Pearce, though, knows full well there are "bigger challenges to come" as the Under-21s aim to maintain their impressive record and go on to reach the finals in Israel.

"I am not an individual who does complacency particularly well, so I don't think we will have that in the squad," the former England captain said.

"Whether we are good enough to win the next game or the one after, I have no idea.

"But we won't be thinking that think one, two or three victories are enough."

Pearce added: "There are bigger challenges to come.

"This is my fourth campaign and I am acutely aware of what it will take.

"You look at the tables from around Europe, Germany have five victories out of five, Italy have won four from four, France have a 100 per cent record.

"That tells me when you get out of here into the play-offs, you are going to come up against a real tough opposition, then when you get to the finals, it will be even tougher.

"We cannot afford complacency."

Villa forward Nathan Delfouneso came off as a precaution because of a tight hamstring after only 11 minutes on Thursday.

He will be assessed ahead of the trip to Mons, along with Blackburn midfielder Jason Lowe (hamstring) and defender Adam Smith (ankle), who is on loan at MK Dons from Tottenham.
