Barry Robson misses the visit of Derby County through suspension, Julio Arca replacing him, while Faris Haroun drops to the bench to make way for Scott McDonald, who was left out of Boro's 2-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest in midweek.
Carl Ikeme has not recovered from a hand injury so Jason Steele plays his third consecutive game in goal, while Merouane Zemmama slots into the midfield for his first league start of the campaign.
Derby County, meanwhile, field their youngest ever player – Mason Bennett, who is just 15 years old.
The Rams last tasted victory on Teesside in January 2000 – striker Bennett was just three years old.
