DURHAM are hoping South African David Miller will rejoin them at the end of the week in time to play in the last three Twenty20 group games.
There is then a three-week break before the quarter-finals on August 6 and 7, but if Durham qualify coach Geoff Cook expects Miller to stick around.
"He's in the middle of a triangular one-day tournament with South Africa A in Zimbabwe, so a lot will depend on what the South African authorities say," said Cook.
"We would like to use David. He has had good input and kept the impetus going."
Initially batting at No 5 with little opportunity to settle in, Miller had a top score of 26 not out in his six innings before heading for Zimbabwe, where he has scored 12 and nought in his two innings to date.
He has been batting at six in a team captained by Jacques Rudolph, who quit Yorkshire partly in the hope of regaining his Test place.
South Africa A have two more games, today and tomorrow, and Miller is not expected to be available for Durham's home match against Yorkshire on Friday evening.
He could play at Scarborough on Sunday, however, as Durham look to win all four remaining games in the hope of clinching second place and a home quarter-final.
They have a game in hand on Leicestershire, who are five points ahead in second spot with a home game against Derbyshire and away matches against Yorkshire and Warwickshire to come.
The likelihood is that Durham will have to head to the south coast, or Taunton, for a quarter-final, but Cook said: "Just to get through would be a good thing.
"Selection for a quarter-final would certainly be interesting as Ben Stokes should be fit by then. It will be exciting for the team to have his input."
The finger which Stokes dislocated in the championship match at home to Lancashire on June 1 had to be re-pinned, setting him back slightly. It will be touch and go whether he is ready for the next championship game at Taunton, starting on July 21.
Scott Borthwick, the other young player who interests the England selectors, has been invited to join the one-day squad in their preparations for tomorrow's one-day international at Trent Bridge.
