Jemma Lowe produced her second world-class swim of the week when she moved up to third in the world rankings with a storming 200m butterfly at the British Gas ASA National Championships in Sheffield.

The Hartlepool-born swimmer, competing for Swansea Performance, pipped European multi-medallist Fran Halsall earlier in the week in the 100m event by just 0.01secs.

Last night, however, she completely dismantled the opposition from the start, winning by 5.71secs in 2mins 05.36secs.

It lifted her above fellow Briton Ellen Gandy, who had already qualified for Shanghai, in the rankings.

Lowe, clearly benefiting from her move to South Wales following a stint in Florida, said: "I am really happy. It's really exciting I'm near the top of the world."

Meanwhile, Rebecca Adlington defied tiredness brought on by her heavy training schedule to post her second dominant victory in 24 hours.

Adlington is ploughing through 70 kilometres a week in the pool but she demonstrated her power and racing skills to add the 400m freestyle to the 800m she won on Thursday night.

As with Thursday's final, Eleanor Faulkner used Adlington's pace to go with her before the latter pulled away with 150m to go and touched in 4:08.32.

Adlington had already qualified in the 200m, 400m and 800m freestyle, topping the world rankings in the two longer distances.

Last night, though, the 22-year-old admitted she had found the eight lengths gruelling.

Adlington said: "It was a really tough race. Last night it felt really smooth and strong and I didn't really have that same feeling tonight. I am tired.

"I was just trying to do a solid swim, I wasn't expecting to do anything fast."
