Yorkshire battled hard during the afternoon session on the final day of their County Championship match with Sussex.
They only lost one wicket at Hove – to boost their chances of salvaging a draw from the contest.
By tea on day four they had reached 261 for five.
This means they were only 14 runs away from making Sussex bat again, and with only 30 overs of the game left after the interval the Tykes will now be confident of avoiding defeat.
Jonny Bairstow was the only man to fall after lunch - when he top edged a sweep off Monty Panesar to Kirk Wernars for 76.
This brought Adil Rashid to the middle, with the leg-spinner and Gary Ballance then reaching the interval with an unbroken stand of 68.
Rashid was unbeaten on 27, with Ballance not-out on 33.
