NANTON rolled back the years to take the spoils in the totepool Zetland Gold Cup at Redcar.
The Jim Goldie-trained veteran defied top weight in the valuable 10-furlong handicap with an ultragame display in the hands of Danny Tudhope.
Goldie’s 25-1 chance made stealthy progress inside the final three furlongs before heading Desert Romance, who finished third, in a frenetic dash to the line.
Prince Of Johanne stayed on for second, but had no chance with the winner and was a length and a quarter adrift of the popular grey.
The Scottish handler had a vintage afternoon at the Tees Valley circuit as the Tudhope-ridden Namwahjobo (9-4) later emerged triumphant in the six-furlong maiden.
