It is highly likely the Group 1 Lockinge Stakes prize at Newbury will be heading back to the Richard Hannon yard; the question is with which horse?

Crowned champion trainer last year, Hannon saddles two of the best milers in the country, Canford Cliffs and Dick Turpin.

The talented duo have met three times before and Dick Turpin has come out on top twice.

Stable jockey Richard Hughes has opted to ride Canford Cliffs and Ryan Moore has been booked to ride Dick Turpin.

There is little doubt that Canford Cliffs will confirm himself a better horse later in the season but he is going to go off a short price today. He is coming back from a long lay-off and did need his first run last season, whereas Dick Turpin looked every bit as good when demolishing his rivals at Sandown three weeks ago.

For that reason, I'm swaying towards Dick Turpin to rob his stable-mate of first prize today.

If anyone missed having a day out at this week's top-class Dante Meeting at York there are plenty of chances to go local racing this weekend as Thirsk stage an eight-race card this afternoon and Ripon are due to race tomorrow.

The first race at Thirsk, the first division of a one-mile handicap, is due off at 1.35pm and Ruth Carr can have another winner with Cono Zur.

Carr who recently lost her grandfather, David Chapman, has her horses in fine form and this four-year-old can follow up on his recent Beverley success from a five-pound higher mark.

Formally trained by Mark Johnston, Cono Zur likes to make the running. Those tactics seem very well suited to this track and he can make all under top apprentice James Sullivan.

The second division is due off at 3.15pm and this event can go the way of the in-form Richard Fahey with Extraterrestrial.

The seven-year-old hasn't won in the best part of two years but in that time he has slipped down to a very decent handicap mark. A previous course and distance winner, Extraterrestrial will be ridden by former leading apprentice Fredrik Tylicki, a combination that teamed up to score earlier this week with Common Touch, and they can have another winner here.

Ripon's first race tomorrow is due off at 2.10pm and ten runners head to post for an interesting fillies' handicap at 3.10pm.

Middleham trainer Ben Haslam has a fine chance of taking the prize with recent Doncaster winner Azzurra Du Caprio, who again will be ridden by PJ McDonald.

The handicapper has raised her 5lb for that success, but that hike in the weights wouldn't have stopped this three-year-old last time and she looks like she could still be a step ahead of the handicapper. Let's hope so.
