FORMER Yorkshire captain Anthony McGrath believes his team-mates Tim Bresnan and Ajmal Shahzad can achieve whatever they want in cricket.
His comments come after both were selected in England’s final squad for next month’s ICC World Cup.
The duo’s inclusion was widely expected, despite the original 30-man party being cut in half yesterday, but their selection for the tournament is a further sign that both players are held in high regard by the England staff.
McGrath, who made 20 appearances for his country between 2003 and 2004, is tipping both to impress in the competition which starts next month.
“Both have been doing really well for England lately so it would have been a strange decision to omit one of them,” added the 35 year-old.
“I just hope they both get a proper run in the team now - then we will be able to see just how good they are.”
The only disappointment for Yorkshire was the decision to choose Kent’s James Tredwell as the third spinner ahead of Adil Rashid.
While the leg-spinner will now concentrate on an England Lions’ tour to the West Indies, Bresnan and Shahzad can dream of adding a World Cup winner’s medal to the World Twenty20 title which they picked up in the Caribbean last May.
McGrath is as qualified as anyone to talk about the abilities of his two Headingley colleagues. He was even on the pitch when both players made their respective firstclass debuts.
“I can particularly remember Bresnan’s,” confirmed McGrath. “You could see he had something special. I have watched him progress from a youngster to what he is now and it is lovely to see him achieve so much.”
