After a rain delay, Graeme Swann made the first breakthrough, that of Peter Siddle. With the new ball taken, James Anderson took the second wicket, as Ben Hilfenhaus fell.
Finally Chris Tremlett got Michael Beer out.
The margin of victory was an innings and 83 runs, England's third innings success of the tour and the first time they have won the Ashes down under in 24 years.
Durham's Paul Collingwood, on his final Test match said: "I've got the enjoy it, but move on. This team will go to bigger and better things. To win in Australia in front of so many England fans...
"It was an honour to lead the team out for my final day. It's a day to savour.''
