CHESTER-LE-STREET produced one of the surprises of the night when they beat Birtley 2-1 last night.

They took the lead in the opening minutes when Liam McBryde cut in from the right and fired into the top corner, and just on half time McBryde crossed for Gary Shields to head in.

Craig Armstrong pulled a late goal back for Shields.

Durham City were facing extra time against Jarrow Roofing until Amar Purewal scored in the fifth minute of stoppage time. Josh Home-Jackson and Elliott Cutts in turn put Durham ahead, with Jamie Marshall and Craig Nelson in turn equalising. City finished the game with ten men because they had four players taken off through injury one of whom, Jack Pounder, was taken to hospital.

Spennymoor had a 5-0 win at Tow Law. They took an early lead through Calvin Smith who snapped up a rebound, and Michael Laws ran through and sidefooted the second.

Gavin Cogdon dribbled past three men and blasted the third, and just after the break Chris Killeen headed a long ball past his own keeper. Sub Steve Richardson scored the fifth late on.

Norton beat Darlington 2-1 at Station Road. Jordan Marshall put Quakers ahead on 38 minutes, but Jamie Clarke equalised six minutes fater half time, with Danny Earl scoring the winner on the hour.

West Auckland won 2-1 at Horden.

Stuart Banks fired them in front with a 25 yarder after 25 minutes, with Matthew Coad adding the second on 46 minutes after beating two men.

Bakary Bojang pulled one back from close range with five minutes left.

Darlington RA pushed Billingahm Town all the way to penalties in the Durham Challenge Cup.

They were behind twice with Steve Flockett and Micky Dunwell putting Town into the lead before battling RA hit back through Phil Caley and Paul Freary. Town won 4-3 on penalties.
