WE ASKED the Legends this week:

As people who work in radio, do you think Gordon Strachan’s comments last week were harmless or offensive to Boro fans?

MALCOLM MACDONALD:

YOU can’t have harmless fun and involve drugs or alcohol and anybody in the public eye must not bring such matters into the public domain in a fashion that would encourage youngsters to think it is okay to do it, and that is what Gordon has run the risk of. It’s a huge no-no.

I wasn’t shocked at all. He has spoken into lots of microphones and been in enough press rooms at a whole host of football clubs and he knows what the limits are, he knows what the rules are and he’s just completely broken them.

I remember when he first arrived at Boro and he said, ‘Well I don’t really need this job’ or words to that effect.

He seems to me to be treating the club and the supporters with the same disdain he showed when he was first appointed. He’s still saying strange things and very dangerous things and it surprises me that Boro haven’t come out and just dealt with the situation and it isn’t giving off a good image of the club.

MICKY HORSWILL:

I DON’T just think his comments are offensive to Boro fans, but to the public in general. At the moment, everybody is trying to get rid of the drugs environment around the world and for somebody to come out, who is in the public eye and is supposed to be well respected at a top football club, it’s ridiculous to come out and say it, even in jest.

“It silly to come out with things like that when you’ve got children listening to you and kids copy things these people say and do, and if you’ve got the guy that’s in charge coming out with things like that it’s crazy, even if it was said as a joke.

Steve Gibson won’t be impressed.

He loves his football club and anything bad said about his club he won’t like. In today’s climate you can’t afford to lose any supporters and things like that could lose you supporters, especially when you’re having a bad time. Strachan should have thought about what he said before he said it and I’m surprised the club haven’t come out and said something about it.”

BERNIE SLAVEN:

IT’S the type of character Strachan is, but in the modern day society and especially in Middlesbrough, there is a drink and drug culture and to come out with comments like that nobody can support him and anyone who does is an idiot, you can’t say things like that. It was meant to be a joke but you just don’t want to hear it.

I’m embarrassed as an ex-player and fan of Boro that nobody has come out and said anything. We’ve scored so many own goals over the years and this is another big PR disaster. I would ban Strachan for a couple of weeks to get an apology.

He has got a reputation of being obnoxious at times and I can’t quite grasp that. If you ask a question, you should expect to get a valid answer and not have to deal with someone being rude and arrogant.

I agree with some of the things he says but at times he can be very rude. At the end of the day it’s illmannered and he’s rubbing people up the wrong way. It’s not good for the club and the club must come out and say something.

They’ve got to attract more people back to the club and Strachan doing things like this won’t attract people to come and watch games.”
