JOE Allon and Paul Baker were back together this week to promote the reunion of Hartlepool United’s 1990-91 promotion winning squad.

The pair formed a formidable strike force 20 years ago and will be back in tandem next month, as the squad get together.

Allon was the top scorer that season with a club record 35 goals, captain Baker netted 14 as Cyril Knowles’ side secured the club’s second promotion.

Allon, now a successful after dinner speaker, said: “It will be a real special occasion. I loved my time at Hartlepool and my speech will reflect the fantastic promotion season.

“The season had its highs and lows. The loss of the great Cyril Knowles was a tragedy that still haunts me and we will reflect on that.”

Baker added: “That season was undoubtedly the best of my career, and I was so proud to be playing for Hartlepool, the people in the town were unbelievable me.

“We had a special bond as a squad, and various tough events in that season simply made us stronger as a unit.

“Pools supporters often tell me it was the best squad they had ever had the pleasure of watching.’’ Among those lined up for the night are Brian Honour, Paul Dalton, Mick Smith, Keith Nobbs, John MacPhail and Mick Smith. It will be hosted by Pools fan Paul Gough of Goffy Media, who promises several surprises.

Tickets for the event on Thursday, November 18 at the Rovers Quoit Club are priced at £15, including supper. They are available from Goffy Media on 07990 588424.
