Evenwood Road Runners

EVENWOOD Road Runners had a fantastic turnout at the Raby Castle 10k and 5k Fun Run on May 28.

In the 5k fun run the junior section battled against the wind around a undulating course.

Demi Douthwaite led the club home in 26.48 for 26th position with sister Sarah 10 places behind for 36th position in 27.43.

Next to return was Sophie Hughes in 27.51 in 37th place. Matthew Hehir had a excellent run and finished in 38th place in 27.55. Helen Pounder 30.11 for 59th position and Ruth Bracegirdle 30.30 in 62nd place with Kate Pounder hot on her heels in 30.55 for 56th place.

Joseph Williamson, running strong, completed the course in 31.22 taking 71st position. Georgia Dobinson took 84th position in 32.41. Taking 99th place was Emma Gibson in 34.10. New member Megan Robinson completed the course in 34.43 for 106th pos. Lauren Furness finished in 113th place in 35.05 with senior member Glynn Frith one place behind in 35.10.

Harry Welsh produced a good time having started later than everyone else. He worked hard to catch up with his team-mates and finished in 38.19 for 134th position. Lucy Gibson crossed the finishing line in 39.56 claiming 144th place.

Following in their grandfathers footsteps were Joshua Kay and Aimee Townsend, the smallest members of the team. Joshua ran with grandad Tony Hindmarsh and they finished in 47.07 and 47.08 in 175 and 176 positions respectively.

Aimee was accompanied by grandad Andrew Laybourne, finishing in 47.21 and 47.22 for 177 and 178 positions respectively.

In the 10k the senior members also had to battle against the wind around the two-lap course. Robert McAloon brought the club home in 39.52 for 31st position. Sean Glasper running strong finished in 42.54 for 78th place.

Darren Fairclough took 88th position in a time of 43.29. Neil Douthwaite setting his pace ready for his marathon finished in 43.56 for 98th place. Ron Pounder took it steady after returning back from injury and finished in 164th place in 46.34. Donna Douthwaite returned in 50.14 in 249th pos next to return was Phil Baxter in 51.14 for 279th pos. Dawn Ord and Kenneth Sams completed the course in 1.10.19 and 1.10.20 for 522 and 524 pos. Alan Dickinson finished 1.13.01 for 529 position.

Thirsk and Sowerby Harriers

THERE was an excellent turnout of Harriers for the Friendly Village 10k at Melmerby, which was the second race in this year's Black Sheep Series.

There was a strong wind which affected finishers' times. Gary Dunn was again the winner, having established a significant lead before he left the village. His winning time was 32.22, more than 30 seconds ahead of the second-placed runner.

Cameron Choules finished 19th in 38.18, Les Sutton-Haigh 58th in 42.02, David Goddard, improving with every outing, 81st in 44.16, John Murphy 115th in 47.14, Hugh Jenyns 118th in 47.49, Ernie Huck 123rd in 48.06, Ian Codling 134th in 49.00, Jonathan Severs 161st in 51.41, Pat Kirby 163rd in 52.19, Yvonne Wood 167th in 52.52, Judith Seaton 169th in 52.59, Jo Fambely 177th in 54.26, Nik Sutton-Haigh 178th in a personal best time of 54.37, Cheryl Kirby 185th in 55.30, Eileen Howell 186th in 55.39, Michael Pointon 192nd in 57.09, Elizabeth Pointon 193rd in 57.10, Pamela Sherlock 205th in 60.07 and Marian Codling 218th in 64.58. Ernie Huck and Pat kirby won 2nd prizes in the V55 category with Pamela Sherlock getting 3rd prize in that category.

On the same day the White Rose 10k took place over a flat course at Wiggington as part of a weekend Festival of Sport.

Emma Tullett won the Ladies' race in a very good 37.08 with Sarah Somers 113rd in 49.58 and Margaret Tullett 161st in 57.16.

Maggie Allison joined the 538 runners in the two-lap scenic 10k race at Raby Castle, finishing 518th in 69.20.

The White Rose Festival of Sport continued on Monday with a Duathlon - a 10k run followed by a 40k (25 mile) bike ride and a 5k run. Wind was again a factor and this was a new venture for some of the Harriers, up against regular Duathlon competitors from all over the north and further.

Matt Moorhouse of Preston Tri-athlon club won the event in 1.53.59, and Simon McKeown managed 124th in 2.43.12, Mark Ludiman 129th in 2.44.54, Cath Lumb 149th in 2.59.05, Fiona Wilson 151st in 3.03.42, with Charlotte Robinson 155th in 3.09.10. A hard event was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

Richmond and Zetland Harriers

There were several top performances in the second of the Young Athlete's League meetings, which took place at Jarrow on Sunday, May 21.

Nick Outhwaite again claimed top spot in the pole vault and Jack Thomas completed a fantastic hat-trick of wins in the Under-15s Boy's 100m, 200m and 400m. Nathaniel Frankland won the Under-13s Boy's 100m and 200m. For the girls, Leanne Shaw had an excellent day, with third in the 100m, second in the 200m and top position in the 300m. Team-mate Brogan Fraser fared well in the Under-15s Girl's age group, taking second and third place in the sprints and a win in the Javelin. Holly Carrick recorded two triumphs in the Under-15s Girl's discus and shot putt, while Amy Coulson and Kerry Robson fared well in the long jump.

Results of the first Northern Senior League track and field meeting, also held at Jarrow on May 6 are now confirmed and show a disappointing turn out from Richmond and Zetland Harriers, with a total of only nine athletes electing to compete.

Undeterred, those attending put in solid performances in an attempt to cover as many events as possible, making for a busy afternoon. Jon Orange and Nick Zissler showed good early season track performances, as well as John Wild proving he is still in fine throwing form, covering all four events. Noveed Adris worked hard at the sprints and hurdles, while captain Chris Peacock tackled the middle distances and supported in the throws. For the ladies, Sarah Gregory ran two sound events in the 3000m and 1500m, while Jenny Fenwick and Fiona Hughes proficiently tackled a range of distances and events from 200m upwards and Jo Binks fared well in many of the field events and hurdles, showing some promising form for later in the season.

The second Harrogate League Road Race got underway at Starbeck on Thursday May 18, again with fewer athletes from the club available than previously. This is a longer course than most, taking in trails and off-road tracks, in addition to the road sections. Jon Orange was first across the line for the Harriers, once again taking fourth position and maintaining pole position in the male V40 category; he was followed in by Shaun Purkiss in 15th place with another strong performance. Chris Peacock maintained good form to come home in 44th, while Taff Rogers finished comfortably inside the top third of runners, taking 77th spot. Jeff Thurlbeck rounded off the men's vet team, which finished in third place on this occasion, after their victory in the last race, when he completed the course in 91st place. Next Harrier home was Ian Hepworth, with a solid run to finish as 136th across the line, while the only lady, Paula Copeland, fared extremely well to bring the team home, when she claimed 152nd position from 259 competitors. Tomy Colmer unfortunately pulled up midway through the race with a calf injury, but hopes to be back in action soon.

Andrea Woodvine continued her outstanding form, when she took part in the Loughborough Grand Prix on the track on Sunday, May 21. Taking part in the Women's 5000m race, she ran a spectacular time of 17.15.46 and took seventh place in the process. This is a superb time for Andrea and ranks her as 43rd in the country over the distance - a fantastic performance.
