Portsmouth assistant manager Kevin Bond is expected to sign with Newcastle as Glenn Roeder's number two.
The move opens the door for Pompey to offer Jamie Redknapp a coaching job at Fratton Park under the wing of his father Harry.
Speculation has been rife for some time that Redknapp junior, 32, would join the staff at Portsmouth - despite the fact he currently works for Sky Sports as a football pundit and his previous connection with deadly rivals Southampton, where he spent the last season of his career before retiring through injury.
Bond, 48, the former Southampton, Bournemouth, Manchester City and Norwich defender, is in his third spell at Pompey as a coach and followed manager Redknapp back there last December from Saints.
But he was offered only a one-year extension to his contract at the end of last season and is believed to accepted a longer-term deal at Newcastle.
Portsmouth are staying tight-lipped about the situation.
