ONLY one game went ahead on Saturday when Ryhope CW had the distinction of hosting the first fixture in five weeks.

Their efforts in making the ground playable were rewarded with a comfortable victory over Willington in a top-versus-bottom contest.

Until Willington conceded the second goal, however, it was difficult to separate the teams and despite losing 3-0 the visitors will be encouraged by the performance.

It took a penalty after 25 minutes to break the deadlock. David Newby was brought down and Michael Turnbull confidently struck the ball into the net wide of goalkeeper Chris Sawyer.

The visitors almost equalised but in the 35th minute their hopes of causing an upset faded when the Wearsiders doubled their lead.

Following a short corner, Richard Jordan turned in the box and his rasping drive evaded the impressive Sawyer. It was Jordan’s 17th goal of the season.

Ryhope coasted through the second half and increased their advantage 20 minutes from the end.

Jordan held off his marker but was up-ended by Sawyer and Turnbull converted his second spot-kick of the game.

Jordan again impressed in the Ryhope attack and Dean Arkley was also outstanding in midfield to help their side go six points clear of Scarborough Town at the top of the table.

The other seven fixtures were called off, as was Scarborough Town’s Sunderland Shipowners’ Cup tie with Jarrow, who made a fruitless journey.

Boro had hoped the game would go ahead but shortly before kick-off the match official declared the pitch to be unplayable.
