THERE is no sign of the weather letting go of its grip on racing and after a completely blank day yesterday, hopes remain pinned on Ffos Las this weekend for jumping action.
Saturday’s other meetings at Wincanton and Sedgefield were called off early.
Sedgefield’s Charlie Moore made a quick call, reporting: ‘‘Our next fixture is January 26 so we are hoping for a thaw before then.’’ Wincanton suffered two inches of snow overnight and clerk Barry Johnson had a miserable assessment.
He said: ‘‘I don’t think I’ve ever seen the track as frozen as this.’’ Not even yesterday’s allweather meetings at Lingfield and Kempton could beat the big freeze after inches of snow fell at both venues and while the tracks were raceable, it was deemed unsafe for people to get to and from the courses.
Kempton’s clerk Barney Clifford inspected three times in the morning and eventually made the call close to midday.
The Sunbury venue is also due to report for duty today – but that fixture is also under a cloud and faces an 8am inspection.
Clifford said: ‘‘The main problem is accessibility for officials such as ambulance men and doctors.
‘‘We’ve given it every chance but the weather has beaten us. We had to give it time.’’ Lingfield’s afternoon meeting was placed in jeopardy after four inches of overnight snow and today’s meeting needs to pass a 6.30am check.
There has been no jumping since Sunday at Plumpton and there will be no more until at least Saturday with Huntingdon and Ludlow today already gone, followed by Bangor and Fontwell tomorrow.
Ffos Las, due to stage a valuable card on Saturday, is the only possible beacon of hope for jumps fans.
‘‘We’ve got a good chance of racing but the only thing that would give us cause for alarm is that the overnight temperatures are due to get decidedly lower by Thursday and Friday,’’ clerk of the course Tim Long said.
‘‘If we could have something like a thaw through today and the first part of tomorrow we could get the sheets out on the entire track, we already have vulnerable areas covered but it’s our intention to cover the whole lot given a window.”
Sunday’s card at Hereford has already gone and in Ireland, Punchestown on Saturday has been cancelled with Sunday’s valuable Leopardstown card also in doubt with the track currently unraceable.
