NEWCASTLE have confirmed that Chris Hughton will resume caretaker control when the club's players return for the start of pre-season training on Wednesday.

Hughton, who spent two unsuccessful spells in charge of the Magpies last season, will be assisted by Colin Calderwood as Mike Ashley refuses to appoint a permanent manager as he attempts to sell the club.

Hughton said: "Everything will be done properly with the group of players that is there, and everything going on outside of that has to stay outside of it.

"Whatever the situation will be, when it comes to the first day of pre-season training, the players will go through a good and correct programme for however long it is until someone takes over."
