SARAH BORWELL has set her sights on the US Open after her Wimbledon campaign came to an abrupt end at the weekend.

The Middlesbrough-born tennis ace crashed out of the mixed doubles with Scot Colin Fleming on Saturday as they slipped to a 7-6, 6-4 defeat to 13th seeds Mahesh Bhupathi and Sania Mirza.

Borwell was knocked out of the women’s doubles at the first round stage with fellow Brit Anne Keothavong last week but has had an otherwise impressive year, rising to 87 in the world rankings.

And the 29-year-old insists she will head to Flushing Meadows in August looking to make the tennis world sit up and take notice.

“I’m really looking forward to the US Open and I’m really confident I can do well there,”

said Borwell. “I haven’t finalised my partner yet but I’ll probably badger Anne to see if she will play with me again.

“My ranking’s good enough for a direct acceptance which is nice but I’d still like to improve my ranking even further before I get there.”

Borwell’s SW19 adventure ended in virtual darkness on Saturday night, while wind and rain in south west London made conditions difficult for both pairs.

But Borwell added: “I don’t think there was any danger of us stopping before the end of that second set.

“It was quite slippery at the start and sometimes that is enough just to put you off but they are a very good couple and they beat us fair and square.

“I’ve enjoyed playing with Colin this year and I’d love to do it again in the future if that is an option.”
