NEWCASTLE schoolgirl Alex Walker is hoping she’ll be top of the class at Junior Wimbledon after being handed a wildcard to the All England Club.
The 16-year-old has just completed her GCSEs but now faces the biggest test of her tennis career after being entered into the main draw.
Walker, who trains at the Northumberland Tennis Academy, is still trying to find her feet on the circuit again after a car crash in April forced her to spend a week in hospital.
But after making a full recovery, Walker has vowed to return to form on the famous SW19 grass courts and banish her injury-plagued build-up to the back of her mind.
“It’s not been the best preparation in the world,”
said Walker, who lost in the AEGON Junior International in Roehampton at the firstround stage.
“I’ve had my GCSEs to think about as well as recovering from the car crash, when I hurt my head quite badly.
“But if anything, it has made me more determined than ever to do well. I give training and matches everything and my work ethic has improved.”
Most eyes will be on the new darling of British tennis, 15- year-old Laura Robson, after her exploits in the main women’s draw this week.
Robson will return to the junior circuit to defend her Wimbledon title but Walker, who missed three months of action with glandular fever last season, insists she has the potential to hog the headlines.
“Playing at Wimbledon means everything to me,” she added.
“It’s something I’ve dreamed of since I was a little girl and after the year I’ve had it would certainly help me get back on the right track.”
