SARAH Borwell has won only her second ever match at Wimbledon after partnering Colin Fleming to a mixed doubles victory at the All England Club.

The 29-year old made her SW19 debut in 2003 but has only reached the second round once, in the women’s singles three years ago.

But alongside Fleming she saw off the challenge of Dusan Vemic and Flavia Pennetta 7-5 4-6 7-5 and they’ll now face 13th seeds Mahesh Bhupathi and Sania Mirza in the second round.

“Myself and Colin have never played mixed doubles before and we made a lot of errors early on as we got used to it,” said Borwell.

“We just have to take each match as it comes but I think we could be quite a good partnership, our games seem to suit each other.

“I think we’ll get better as each match goes on – we were both pretty nervous because we wanted to do so well.”

Borwell, from Middlesbrough, quit singles last year to focus on doubles, where she is ranked 87th in the world.

She had high hopes of success alongside British number one partner Anne Keothavong but the pair lost in the first round.

However, she believes a run in the mixed could be just the lift she needs as the hard court season approaches.

“It’s nice to get through and to win at Wimbledon is special,” she added.

“The women’s doubles defeat was tough to take because we thought we had a really good chance.

“I was a bit low after that and then I saw this draw and thought it was going to be tough again.

“Jamie Murray won the mixed a few years ago when he just got on a run.”
