ANDY MURRAY feels some intense training in the Miami heat helped ‘‘kick’’ on his game towards a genuine shot at the Wimbledon title.
The 22-year-old, who last week became the first British winner at Queen’s in 71 years, has come a long way since his quarter-final defeat by eventual winner Rafael Nadal at the All England Club last summer.
Murray is seeded third for the 2009 Championships and will avoid the other leading contenders in the opening rounds in Friday’s draw.
In the last 12 months, he’s added another level of power to his game and carried on the momentum from his first grand slam final appearance at the 2008 US Open.
‘‘When my game kicked on, I started to improve big time since Wimbledon last year and I learned that I was in much better shape but needed to get even stronger to be able to play back-to-back five-set matches over the whole tournament,’’ he said.
‘‘After Wimbledon, I went to train in Miami for three or four weeks and that is pretty tough weather to train in around this time of year.
‘‘That made a difference going into the hard court stretch and I made my first slam final. I have that belief that I can play the whole of the slams now.
