ROB Lawson survived the lottery of a downpour during the second of two races to be named driver of the weekend at Croft.

Having recorded a sixth place finish in the opening race of the Porsche Carrera Cup championship, Lawson, from Barton, near Richmond, played it safe in the rain and sealed a fine outing with a well-judged fourth.

Lawson, the JHR Developments driver who is backed by Bardon Aggregates and Bardon Concrete, is fifth in the overall championship and has pulled further ahead in his pro-am class after notching a further 24 points at the track.

“I am very, very pleased,” he said. “We have got two very good results, which was the aim, and a load more points.”

Lawson had been disappointed with his qualifying for the races, having posted good times in practice, seventh on the grid was not really to his liking.

But he didn’t let that disappointment get him down and stuck to the task in hand.

“We made some radical changes and in the first race the car was a little bit better, but there was still some room for improvement,” he said.

“The second race was a bit of a lottery for everybody. It was a case of monitoring the mirrors and doing what you had to and don’t try and do anything to raise the bar too much and make a silly mistake while leading the class.

“I had nothing to catch in front and there was nothing to catch me particularly behind. It was just a case of doing what you need to do.”

Lawson was delighted with his award from the competition organisers.

“It would have been nice to have had an outright podium, but I have been awarded driver of the weekend, which is fantastic.

It gives the team a bit of a pat on the back and says lads you have done a good job.”
