ANDY Murray insists there will be no old pals’ act when he takes on the USA’s Mardy Fish in the quarter-finals of the AEGON Championships later today.
The British number one wasted little time in cruising through the third round at Queen’s, easing his way past world number 52 Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain 6-4, 6-4.
The Dunblane-born star will now take on eighth seed Fish, who booked his place in the last eight with a comprehensive 6-1, 6-4 victory over Feliciano Lopez.
Murray leads the 27-yearold American – who he regularly practices with on tour – 2-1 in their three previous encounters, and the Scot is determined to leave Fish floundering at Queen’s.
“I played him a few times before and we do get on well,”
said Murray. “He’s a very good grass court player so I’ll have to be at the top of my game.
“He has a big serve, likes to come to the net. He likes short points, so I’ll have to pass and return well tomorrow.
“The guys that I played so far are good grass court players.
But I haven’t played any top ten players.
“So sometimes you have to wait and see until you play against one of the top guys to see where your game’s at.
“I feel good on the court.
I’m moving well, hitting the ball clean. “It will be a good test to see where I’m at and see what things I need to work on.
“You play the guys that are playing best in the tournament and I’m looking forward to that challenge.”
But it was a miserable day for Middlesbrough’s Sarah Borwell as she crashed out of the doubles at the AEGON Classic.
Borwell and partner Anne Keothavong were soundly beaten in straight sets 6-2, 6-4 by Yung-Jan Chan and Zi Yan of China.
And the 29-year-old admitted it was one of her worst performances of the year.
“I’ve not played that badly for a long time,” said Borwell.
“It’s my job in the team to be dominant around the net and I didn’t do that.
“It’s back to the drawing board for the next few days and there are plenty of things for me to work on.”
