MICHAEL Dods sent out three runners for the Wedding Receptions At Redcar Racecourse Handicap but despite fielding the favourite, it was 20-1 shot Jimwil who hit the target.
Stablemate Dean Iarracht was the 4-1 favourite for the Redcar heat, with fellow Dods inmate Mister Tinktastic a 13-2 chance but both were found lacking against the outsider.
Jimwil quickened in great style from the rear of the field to lead over a furlong out and having burst clear, Neil Brown had the luxury of easing him down in the last 75 yards.
He still had one and a half lengths to spare over Mo Mhuirnin though, while Dean Iarracht was third and Mister Tinktastic sixth.
‘‘We have these three seven-furlong horses and there are not many races over that trip around,’’ said Dods, based near Darlington.
‘‘I told the owners that all three would run and would be doing their best, and they would have to accept the outcome and they all agreed.
‘‘I would have backed the other two but not Jimwil.’’ Mo Mhuirnin’s trainer Richard Fahey enjoyed better luck later on the card as Dream Lodge initiated a double in the Boddingtons Redcar Straight-Mile Championship Handicap.
Having his first run for Fahey after switching from James Given’s yard, Dream Lodge was sent off the 5-2 favourite and ran out a three-and-a-half-length winner under Frederik Tylicki.
‘‘He came to us after he had run at York last month,’’ said Fahey’s assistant Robin O’Ryan. ‘‘He is straightforward and a good work horse at home, but we are still on a learning curve with him.’’ The Tony Hamilton-ridden The Last Alzao (10-1) opened his account at the fifth attempt and completed Fahey’s brace in the Go Racing In Yorkshire Summer Festival Handicap.
Mark Johnston has his juveniles in good form and Marsh Warbler (11-8) was another to strike first-time out under Greg Fairley in The Commitments Performing Here On 29th August Median Auction Maiden Stakes.
Johnston said: ‘‘He is by Barathea so we have not been in a rush to run him.
‘‘He did it well but we won’t be thinking about Royal Ascot for him.’’ Johnston doubled up with a rather less obvious success when Cipher popped up at 25-1 under Royston Ffrench in the Ladies’ Day On Saturday 20th June Median Auction Maiden Stakes.
Karl Burke is another with his team in good heart and 9-2 shot Miami Gator was on the mark in the Racing UK Channel 432 Maiden Claiming Stakes.
