MICHAEL Vaughan is a major doubt for Yorkshire’s next County Championship game after a recurrence of a knee injury – but his team are also licking their wounds after falling short against Sussex and a fourth successive draw.

The former England captain exited during the afternoon session after pulling up short when trying to stop a boundary.

“His knee has flared up so he is extremely unlikely to be involved against Somerset on Thursday,” confirmed Martyn Moxon.

“We will assess him to see if there is any possibility that he can be involved but the problem with his knee is that after a while it just needs to be rested.”

Vaughan wasn’t the only one disappointed at the close of play though, after the home bowlers turned on the style in the final session to go extraordinary close to a first four-day win of the season.

With just 14 overs left Sussex were going well on 203 for four after Yorkshire declared to set them 281 to win from 71, before two wickets in as many overs from David Wainwright dramatically altered the course of the match.

First to go was Mike Yardy for 110, before the off-spinner bowled Andrew Hodd for just seven.

Optimism was on the up when Rana Naved ousted Dwayne Smith to reduce Sussex to 241 for six and the two were at it again in an increasingly frantic finale.

Wainwright got his third wicket to remove Robin Martin-Jenkins for eight – before Naved expertly ran out England wicketkeeper Matt Prior to leave Sussex eight down with just under five overs remaining.

By this stage the pendulum had swung towards Yorkshire and despite the visitors still needing just 29 for victory, it was the Tykes’ on the front foot as they desperately tried to prize out the two remaining batsmen.

But it didn’t happen, despite Naved thinking he had a ninth victim when he struck Corey Collymore on the pads – umpire Trevor Jesty said no to a good looking lbw shout and with it went the chance of victory.

“We knew it would be a help to us if they had a chance to win,” said a downbeat Moxon at the close.

“It is frustrating because we have been in good positions in the last three games but haven’t yet been able to get of the mark with a victory.

“We are not doing much wrong for 90 percent of the time but cricket games are won and lost by fine margins.”
