STUART BROAD is intent on continuing England’s fearless brand of cricket after shrugging off his final over drama against Holland to play a pivotal role in their progress to the second stage of the World Twenty20 tournament.
Nottinghamshire seamer Broad was a key figure in England’s two vastly different performances during the group stage, missing three run-out opportunities and a sharp return catch in the final over to let Holland claim a shock victory before taking three for 17 to help overcome Pakistan and reach the Super Eights.
On both occasions Broad’s desire to help England win their first major one-day tournament has been evident, although it backfired on Friday at Lord’s when he attempted a run-out off the final ball allowing Holland to scramble the extra run off an overthrow rather than accept the extra over eliminator on offer in the tournament when scores are level.
But despite the stakes rising as the competition progresses – England now face Super Eights matches against South Africa, India and West Indies – Broad and the rest of the team are determined to continue that brand of cricket.
‘‘It’s about the way we want to play our cricket,’’ explained Broad.
‘‘I said to Paul Collingwood before that last ball, ‘do you want everyone in the ring for the one?’ and he said ‘no, that’s not the way we’re going to play our cricket’.
‘‘We brought Rob Key up to short leg and our mid on and cover up on the one, but the rest was about going for the win, and when you play your cricket like that more often than not it works out for you – that time it didn’t.
‘‘There was no doubt in my mind I was going to throw at the stumps. It’s not in my blood to play cricket safety first. If I’ve got a run-out chance to win the game I want to take it.’’
